Brett Favre Upgrades the Entire Viking Offense
Brett Favre Upgrades the Entire Viking Offense
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports Brett Favre boarded a plane for St. Paul, MN early this morning to sign a two-year contract worth between $10-12 million a year.
Here’s a message to anyone in a deep fantasy football league who already drafted Sage Rosenfels: Run, don’t walk, to the waiver wire and make the appropriate changes.
Say what you want about Favre’s disastrous finish last season with the New York Jets, but he will be a huge upgrade for a Vikings team on the brink of contending for a Super Bowl berth. Fantasy-wise, Favre may not be a top 10 QB anymore, but he will be relevant as a fantasy backup.
More significant, however, will be his effect on his teammates.
Bernard Berrian has been a speedy, talented receiver without a capable quarterback throughout his career. This year he will finally have an experienced, strong-armed field general to help him maximize his extreme potential. Move Berrian way up on your draft boards as a top 20 fantasy wide receiver.
Also taking a huge jump in status will be TE Visanthe Shiancoe because of Favre’s history of looking for his tight end near the goal line. Like Dustin Keller with the Jets last year, Shiancoe immediately becomes a borderline top 10 fantasy tight end due to Favre’s presence.
The biggest factors in Favre and the Jets’ collapse last season were his torn biceps muscle and a series of bad weather games that would make any old man’s arthritis act up.
Protected by the Metrodome, the Vikings will only have to play potential bad weather games Nov. 1 at Green Bay (before the frozen tundra is really frozen) and Dec. 28 at Chicago.
Yes, Favre will throw interceptions, he won’t relate to teammates half his age, and he will be held to a different standard than other Vikings players. But don’t forget how much he elevated the Jets last season, from 4-12 in 2007 to 9-7 and battling for the division in 2008.
If his arm truly is healthy, the Vikings will only improve on their 10-6 2008 season.

Wait and see time but it sounds like it’s all but signed. I’m actually excited that Brett is about to sign.. I like watching him play and it upgrades the entire Minnesota team both offense and defense.
I think he will be affective on a limited basis, but I wonder what his team thinks of him taking the job after skipping most of camp? It’s not that I hate Favre, I just wish he would give it up. How committed to the team are you when you tell them NO, and when the seasons getting underway he wants to play again. I think he wants to play to prove a point, though he is in a good situation to do it with Peterson playing behind him. Berrian will look more attractive, but Favre is not the same QB he once was. He has a good offensive line and weapons in Harvin, Berrian, Peterson and Chester Taylor, so maybe he could put up some decent numbers if he stays healthy. He does make Sunday more interesting in that division, and should create quite a fuss in the Packer media in ’09. My question would be, when he puts on a Vikings uniform, what does that do for the GB legend of Favre? Does it tarnish his fan-base in GB? Will he get boos? Will he play good? If he doesn’t play good, will he be booed in Minnesota and GB? So many questions to this move by the Vikings. I can’t wait until this season starts!
Favre’s effect will not be limited, please explain what you mean. He is a HUGE upgrade over ever QB on the roster. He is a legend beyond our time and commands a team like no other QB in the NFL. He is respected amongst his peers and can flip flop all he freaking wants! lol Every player on the team is thinking “SUPER BOWL” right now as we speak.
I mean limited basis based on the fact that he doesn’t have to win games by himself on the Vikings roster. He is a legend but the focal point of the offence won’t be based on Brett Favre throwing the ball to win games when Peterson is in the backfield. He is an upgrade, but he won’t be needed to throw as much to win games as he was in NY and GB. Childress will be smart with Favre and try and keep him healthy for the playoffs. He was called out last year by his players and coaches for making poor decisions and badly timed throws late in the year, so it can’t be too far fetched that he will be limited in how many times he throws the ball in the regular season. One thing is for sure, he will be watched very closely towards the start of the playoffs. I don’t hate Favre, I just think he is headed towards the twilight of his career and there is no denying he’s not the QB he used to be. The good news is Favre tried to get through the ’08 season without surgery and it costed him towards the end of the year, now he has had the surgery and should be good to go for the ’09 season. I guess we will see….
According to ESPN’s Cris Carter, Brett Favre will start the Vikings preseason game on Friday.
I had no doubt Favre would play again this season but did we really need all the headache of him flip flopping? Just sign already Brett, we know you can’t live without football!
