Former Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent was sentenced Friday to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation for a drunken car crash that killed his friend and teammate, Jerry Brown.

Brent was convicted Wednesday of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 crash on a suburban Dallas highway that killed Brown, who was a passenger in Brent's car. Brent could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

Brent, a defensive tackle, and Brown, a linebacker on the practice squad, also played together at Illinois. They were headed home from a night of partying when Brent lost control of his Mercedes and crashed. Officers who arrived on scene saw Brent trying to pull Brown's body from the wreckage.

Blood tests pegged Brent's blood alcohol content at 0.18 percent, which is more than twice the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent. Prosecutors told jurors that the 320-pound Brent had as many as 17 drinks on the night of the crash.

It was Brown's mom that saved Brent's ass from going to prison. She testified that she didn't want him going to jail. If it wasn't for her he would be up crap creek for a few years.

Yeah, Josh Brent got 10 years probation BUT 180 days in jail for killing someone one while you where driving intoxicated, accident or not is a fricking joke. I can't think of any other mother that would be as forgiving for killing their son/daughter as Jerry Brown's mother has been.

Leonard Little of the Rams received probation after killing a woman while driving drunk in 1998. He played until 2009. So, I guess someone will pick up Brent.

I doubt he'll play in 2014. While Brent has gone through the legal system, Goodell hasn't weighed in on what his league punishment will be. Remember that Brent is a repeat offender in terms of a DWI.

On a side note, Mike Fisher on 105.3 The Fan said this morning that about 40% of Dallas County cases involving intoxication manslaughter do receive probation.

That's cuz the judicial system feels being a Cowboys fan able to watch the games is punishment enough...

This is just my personal feeling but regardless of Brown's mom's feeling on the matter, he took a life driving drunk. A punishment of 180 days in jail feels a little bit on the light side.

Nothing. Business as usual. Check this one out.

In August 2009, Clifton Williams was attending his cousin's hearing at the Will County, New York courthouse. According to an NBC New York report, Circuit Judge Daniel Rozak was in the midst of sentencing Williams' cousin for a felony drug when he exhaled a powerful yawn. According to the judge, Williams "raised his hands while at the same time, making a loud yawning sound." The judge believed the act was a disrespectful interruption of the court room. Instead of proceeding with the trial, Rozak threw out his cousin's case and sentenced Williams to six months in the county pen for contempt of court. After the incident, Williams's 79-year-old grandmother told NBC, "This is ridiculous -- you've got all these people shooting up kids, and here this boy yawns in court [and gets 6 months]. It's crazy."
