I hear you, but he's got the speed and skills to pick it up quick enough IMO. Just as an example, Manny Lawson was also a speedy undersized tweener 43 DE pass rushing phenom in college, Niners drafted him and converted him to OLB expecting a speed rush specialist, and it turned out he excelled in coverage almost from the jump...unfortunately that was all he really excelled in and crap the bed as a rusher generally, but nonetheless.

If you watched his pro day, you would have seen his ability to play OLB. I thought the same thing until I saw him doing drills dropping into coverage. He was very quick and fluid. And chances are, he will be like Tamba Hali and rarely have to do it. He will be rushing the passer more often than not

For what this is worth, 105.3 said this morning Peter King reported in his MMQBC column a friend of the Texans GM told King that the Texans like Mack more than Clowney.

Heard the same thing locally in Phoenix. And it really does make sense given Crennel will undoubtedly run his 3-4 and Mack is a "pure" OLB who lined up occasionally with a hand down. Given Crennel's way of utilizing the OLB's (pass rushers over run stoppers) the Texans must see Mack as a better pass rusher who has a greater ability to drop back into coverage. Haven't seen enough of Mack to really opinionate, but it's hard to believe that another edge rusher has anything over Clowney.

I think that the intensity of the pass rush is almost equal for both players. Clowney may have a slight advantage over Mack but it is not leaps and bounds above him. But Mack's ability to cover, I feel, is more superior to Clowney and that is the tipping balance. Teams will make Clowney show that he can cover the tight ends on some plays. Seeing as he is probably going to be a OLB in the Texans defense. And that is why I would pick Mack over Clowney. But strictly on a pass rush only approach then Clowney of course.

He as an OLB will likely not cover TEs, especially in todays NFL. The ILB or safety will likely take the TE. As an OLB they would mainly have to drop into zone coverage or to the flat to cover the RB coming out of the backfield.

Clowney showed his quickness and fluidity at his pro day to be able to do all of that

Lets face it, you dont draft 3-4 OLBs for coverage ability

Exactly. As long as they show the athleticism to do it 1/10 plays(at best), thats all you need
