The Chicago Blackhawks signed Nikolai Khabibulin to a one-year contract to join the team as a backup goaltender, the team announced Friday.

The 40-year-old Khabibulin was an unrestricted free agent after playing the last four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. He was 4-6-1 with 2.54 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in 12 games last season. He played with the Blackhawks from 2003-09.

Corey Crawford and Ray Emery shared starting goaltender duties for the Blackhawks throughout the regular season last season.
