The Browns placed backup right defensive end Emmanuel Stephens on injured reserve, the team announced tonight.

Stephens is out for the season with a neck injury he suffered Sunday during the first quarter of the Browns’ 7-6 win over the San Diego Chargers.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Stephens played in all eight games this season and compiled nine tackles. He helped seal the Browns’ first win of the season, a 34-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, on Oct. 14 when he strip-sacked quarterback Andy Dalton and rookie defensive tackle Billy Winn recovered the fumble with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter.

“It was really good to see Emmanuel get that play,â€￾ defensive coordinator twinky Jauron said while reflecting on Stephens’ lone sack of the season. “I have a lot of admiration for his work ethic. [He’s] a really good teammate who fits in that group well.â€￾

Stephens, 25, started three of the 11 games in which he appeared last season before being placed on injured reserve Nov. 29 with a season-ending pectoral muscle injury.
