In the days before Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer underwent surgery on his left knee July 25, he expressed confidence he would play in the Sept. 8 season opener against the New York Giants. But with the game only eight days away, Spencer’s status remains up in the air.

On Thursday, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin raised doubts about Spencer’s availability and was certain the seventh-veteran would not be able to play the entire game.

“I’m sure he’s not ready to play 60-something plays, that’s for darn sure,†Kiffin said. “I’m just hoping he’ll be back for some.â€

Meanwhile, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would only speculate when asked Friday on KRLD-FM whether Spencer would be active if he’s not completely healthy.

“Well, he won’t play unless he’s cleared to play,†Jones said. “Now, is that 100 percent of what? He hasn’t played so there’s a conditioning thing, there’s an endurance thing but he’ll be 100 percent if he goes to the field.â€
