After exercising patience as he struggled to meet high expectations in his first two seasons, the Falcons decided to take a different tack with DE Jamaal Anderson this year when head coach Mike Smith announced early in camp that the starting left end spot, which had securely been Anderson's for his entire career, was open for competition. Chauncey Davis, formerly the primary backup at left end, had four sacks last season — twice the number Anderson has for his career — and is the top option to move into the starting lineup should Anderson not show the toughness, determination and pass-rush skills he's been lacking thus far. Anderson, the eighth overall pick in 2007, moved inside to tackle in passing situations last season to make room for Davis off the edge, but Smith seems to think that Davis can be more than a specialist and the two will likely rotate taking snaps with the first team for most of camp.
