Falcons linebacker Stephen Nicholas (toe injury) worked out with the team's athletic performance staff Monday. “I would say that right now it’s doubtful that he’ll be able to come back this week,â€￾ head coach Mike Smith said. With Nicholas out and Mike Peterson on injured reserve, Spencer Adkins, a third-year player, played about 25 snaps in the base defense against Tampa Bay and finished with three tackles. “I thought he did a nice job,â€￾ Smith said. Meanwhile, starting left cornerback Brent Grimes was declared inactive before the final regular-season game, but is expected to be available for the Giants’ game. Second-year cornerback Dominique Franks took over at his spot. Grimes, recovering from knee surgery, did not practice on Friday and was listed as questionable on the official injury report.
