Former Lions Star G Harvey Sewell Dies After Extended Illness

    Former Detroit Lions star lineman Harley Sewell died Saturday after an extended illness, he was 80. Sewell was drafted by the Lions in the first round out of Texas in 1953, he played 10 seasons with the Lions, one with the Los Angeles Rams and then was a scout for the Rams for 37 years. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Sewell anchored the Lions offensive line that won NFL championships in 1953 and 1957. Sewell and teammate John Gordy were voted the guards on the Lions' all-time team in 2008. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection (1958-60 and 1963) and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
