The mystery of Hakeem Nicks and his supposedly unexplained absence from the New York Giants OTAs took yet another strange turn today with a Pro Football Talk report that the star wide receiver did tell the team he would be skipping the voluntary workouts.

According to PFT, Nicks "told the team he wouldn’t be present for optional offseason workouts."

That is, of course, news to head coach Tom Coughlin. Coughlin expressed his disappointment with Nicks last week and said that "As far as I know, no one has" been in contact with Nicks, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Coughlin also added that "at one point Hakeem told me that he was going to be here and then he was not here."

After a season in which Nicks dealt first with the lingering effects of a broken foot suffered during 2012 OTAs and then a knee injury that limited him during the regular season it is perfectly understandable that Nicks would opt not to take the field until training camp.

The apparent disconnect between what the Nicks camp seems to believe the Giants were told, and what Coughlin and the Giants claim to know, is what is difficult to understand.
