The San Francisco 49ers will ride the David Akers roller coaster at least one more time. A day after Akers missed a 38-yard field goal attempt in the NFC Championship Game -- his 14th misfire of the season -- 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters Akers will be his kicker in Super Bowl XLVII. "The decision's been made," Harbaugh said Monday. "David Akers is our kicker." It's a somewhat surprising vote of confidence by Harbaugh, who previously brought Billy Cundiff off the street early this month to compete with his struggling veteran place kicker. Akers held off Cundiff, who was released on Friday. Akers made a 36-yard attempt in the divisional-round win over the Green Bay Packers, but hit the top of the left upright on his only Sunday attempt. Source: NFL.com
I'd be happy for him if he kicked the game winning FG in the Super Bowl. He's one of those rare kickers who is actually a football player too, he's not afraid to get in and tackle.
Good. Harbaugh just may have given Akers what he probably needs most......a shot of confidence by letting Cundiff go.
akers was such a solid kicker for such a long time. he's really in a funk though. hopefully the SB doesn't come down to a kick for san fran. don't want to see the guy blow the biggest game in his life.
What Dawk said. I hope it comes down to a FG and he splits the uprights from like 52. Dudes still got leg but for whatever reason has a case of the shanks.
