The Detroit Lions will be without one of their best defensive linemen for the next few weeks after tackle Corey Williams underwent knee surgery Tuesday.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz announced the procedure today after Williams missed his second straight practice.

“I didn’t announce it yesterday because I wanted to wait until we got two days of gameplan from Minnesota so they wouldn’t know,†Schwartz said. “But he’ll be declared out this week.â€

Williams had one sack in each of the Lions’ first two games but was ineffective in scaled-back action last week against the Titans.

He’s been bothered by knee pain since early in training camp and practiced sparingly this month.

“His knee had been getting a lot of swelling in it and it slowed him down a little bit from being able to practice, but also slowed him down a little bit in games,†Schwartz said. “So hopefully we can put that behind him with what he had done. But we rotate a lot of guys in there and Nick Fairley and Sammie Hill have an opportunity to go in there and get more playing time.â€
