Patriots To Release LB Derrick Burgess

  1. Adam Schefter reported via twitter that the Patriots are going to release linebacker Derrick Burgess today. Burgess missed the majority of the preseason after reportedly dealing with a "personal situation" (it had initially been said he was contemplating retirement), but since being wooed back by head coach Bill Belichick he's failed to impress during the preseason. The veteran didn't show much intensity while he was out on the field, and didn't really stand out at the outside linebacker position. Ian Rapoport of the Herald believes this move is coming because rookie Jermaine Cunningham is going to be ready for week one against the Bengals September 12th, which is good news since we haven't seen him play so far this preseason. Earlier reports on the rookie had been positive, so hopefully we get to see him make plays next week.
