With Ben Roethlisberger healthy and starting again, the Steelers didn’t need a fourth quarterback.

Brian Hoyer, the former backup to Tom Brady in New England, was released Saturday to make room on the 53-man roster for cornerback Josh Victorian. The former Louisiana Tech defensive back has been on the practice squad all season.

The Steelers brought in Hoyer on Nov. 20 after Roethlisberger and backup Byron Leftwich were injured in successive games. Roethlisberger had rib and shoulder-related injuries that caused him to miss 3 1⁄3 games.
