The San Francisco 49ers have made it known to other teams in the NFL that a trade for quarterback Alex Smith "is effectively complete" and both teams view it as "done," according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Any trade would have to occur after the new league year begins on March 12, as the trade deadline for the 2012 season has already long since passed.

La Canfora said in a subsequent tweet that the Jaguars and Chiefs are the two teams that make the most sense to him in terms of landing spots for Smith, although a trade for a 28-year old quarterback would seem to fly in the face of what Dave Caldwell has said since he was hired as general manager.

"We're going to have a very young team this season," Caldwell told the media at the NFL Combine on Friday. "It's going to be built through the draft and through college free agency."

In 2012, Smith completed 70.2 percent of his passes and accumulated 13 touchdowns and five interceptions in nine starts before he was replaced by Colin Kaepernick following an injury. The 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 34-31.

Alex is not a franchise quarterback. Some poor team is going to over pay this man. He probably going to a horrible team with a bad o-line here comes the old Alex smith we all know and love.

I'm sure that sources will leak the team he's being traded too well before March 12. I'm gonna take wild and insanely inaccurate guess and say he's been traded to the Chiefs lol.

So if LaCanfora is reporting KC or JAX it probably eliminates those two...so it will probably be the Jets or the Raiders.

over pay? kevin kolb and matt cassel made out like bandits when they were traded. alex smith is under contract and i believe he will be making 8 mil this year. a bargain for a qb who is better than jay cutler. there is alot of mis conceptions about the niner's online. they not that good. they give up lots of sacks.

Andy Reid could probably get a lot of mileage and production out of Smith...considering how he made Kevin Kolb, AJ Feeley and even Koy Detmer at times look out there.

Whatever team gets Alex, better work on a long-term contract NOW. You know he needs 7 years to look good.

its amazing that he got a good head coach and he looked good............You think Brady would have been Brady under Singletary and Jimmy Raye? Most completions with only 1 incomplete pass record is owned by Alex Smith it wasnt just dinks and dunks it was 18/19 for 232 3 TDs and 1 dropped pbutt. That is a phenomenal game

go ahead talk crap about him but he got us back into the playoffs and turned his career around under a good head coach. Yes he was the face of a terrible decade but he was also a big part of turning our franchise around. He helped Kaepernick tremendously.

That's exactly one of the ways you have to tell one player isn't all that. You can count his really good games with one hand.

Truth. Vince Young had a lot of nice games too. Matt Cassels been the crap from time to time. Ryan Fitzpatrick, man, he's had a Hall of Fame career if you only count his best games.

I was thinking something like that last week. That would be a STEAL for the Niners...even if they gave up two first rounders in that deal with Smith.
