Manager Joe Girardi said right-hander Phil Hughes will start Game 4 against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night even if the New York Yankees are facing elimination.

"Hughesy will start tomorrow," Girardi said before the Yanks hosted the Orioles on Wednesday night in Game 3 of the AL Division Series, which is tied at one game apiece.

    Under any circumstances?

"Hughesy's starting tomorrow," Girardi said again.

Among Girardi's reasons for starting Hughes on Thursday are the manager's preference to have CC Sabathia on full rest for a potential Game 5 on Friday, and his qualms about using Andy Pettitte on short rest if he went to Sabathia in Game 4.

Sabathia started Game 1 on Sunday, while Pettitte threw Game 2 on Monday.
