In case anyone had missed it, DeMarco Murray debuted on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams and utterly destroyed them, racking up 253 rushing yards and a single score, setting a Cowboys rushing record.

From Greg: If you had checked out last week’s edition of The Brass Knuckles Report, you would have caught my trumping of Murray during the middle of the week. Patting myself on the back ;).

Murray became a hot commodity earlier this week, but there was some definite lingering apprehension from a few owners as to either start him (if owned) or even pick him up in the first place, but after this drubbing—and a very poor Eagles rushing D on tap for Week 8—it is time to scoop up Murray, especially if you were one of the slew of owners who had their RB go down this week. Greg Brosh had written a sleeper article on Murray back in July. Looks like that prediction is coming to fruition.

Speaking of the fallen, let’s see who else is becoming waiver wire gold.

Chris Russell on Twitter has reported that Tim Hightower has suffered what could be a serious knee injury, paving the way for an interesting situation in Washington at RB.

The immediate grab for folks looking for RB help off the waivers is Ryan Torain but after one solid week back on October 2nd, the bruising back hasn’t done much else.

The other option here would be to consider grabbing Roy Helu if he is available, but the “hold for now” approach I would take on Torain, may curb that enthusiasm.

I like Helu’s long-term potential, however, and believe that it is only a matter of time that Torain himself goes down with an injury, so if you have some room, think about stashing Helu.

As a quick overview of injuries out of Washington, keep an eye on Anthony Armstrong as well, after the fractured hand injury to Santana Moss. He may not be worth anything now, but he certainly deserves space on your watch list.

Browns TE Ben Watson suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win over Seattle which could lend some significant upswing value for fellow TE Evan Moore,—albeit in a temporary way.

With only one viable TE option on the field for the interim, Moore could see some increased targets, and could be a solid bye-week fill for those in the market.

If the concussion to Watson is more serious than thought, Moore’s time would obviously increase to compensate.

Christian Ponder and Michael Jenkins made some noise this weekend, and could raise a  few eyebrows from waiver wire seekers, but who holds the real potential here?

In Ponder’s first start of his NFL career, he passed for 219 yards, two TDs and two INTs, which isn’t surprising in any way what-so-ever.

Ponder was bound to throw a pick with Charles Woodson running around, and he was bound to eclipse 200 passing yards against a weak Packers pass D.

Michael Jenkins was one of Ponder’s go to guys that night catching three balls for 111 yards and a single score.

While neither of these players are long-term options, one has to remember that the Vikings face Carolina before heading to the bye week, and then round two with the Packers at Lambeau.

The moral of the story is, if you are in a deeper league, and have a pressing issue at WR or QB for this week or two weeks down thew road, either player could be a nice spot fill.

QUARTERBACKS
John Beck – WAS: Beck nabbed most of his 279 passing yards in garbage time, but he still looked much better than Rex Grossman, showing the ability to scramble around in the pocket and extend plays. The bad news is that Santana Moss could be out for the next 3-4 weeks with a fractured left hand. But Beck could still be a decent QB2 in deeper leagues. He was able to find Fred Davis and Jabar Gaffney after Moss left the game against the Panthers. The Redskins could use more of a running offense until Moss comes back.

Tim Tebow – DEN: It’s not surprising to see Tebow still owned in only 64% of Yahoo leagues. Tebow had some strong games last year, but many owners were hesitant about adding him to their rosters for 2011. Some of that should fade after Tebow put up big scoring numbers in Week 7, which included two touchdown passes against the Dolphins. Tebow, as expected, didn’t put up much in the way of passing yardage (161), but he made up for it with his legs after rushing 8 times for 65 yards. Tebow’s name should continue to be on waiver-wire requests this week.

Matt Moore – MIA: Moore is a very poor waiver-wire option. But like I have said in the past, I have to include guys like him simply for the fact that he could be somewhat useful to those 16-team league owners who are hanging on by a thread with their current quarterbacks. Moore did throw a touchdown pass Sunday against the Broncos, but he is a very weak QB2 going forward. Having lost his first two games, the Dolphins may eventually look at Sage Rosenfels.

Jake Locker – TEN: Some might think that Locker will take over for Matt Hasselbeck, who was benched in the blowout loss to the Texans, but don’t hold your breath. The Titans pulled the veteran simply to keep him from getting injured in a game that meant nothing fast. Locker should continue to sit on dynasty-league rosters only. He completed only one pass for 12 yards.

Carson Palmer – OAK: The Raider went with Kyle Boller as their starter against the Chiefs, but almost everything regarding the Raiders’ offense went wrong. Boller was eventually pulled for Palmer after he threw 3 interceptions. But Palmer wasn’t any better, throwing another 3 picks. Having lost Darren McFadden to a foot injury early didn’t help matters. The Raiders have a Week-8 bye, but Palmer’s decision making seems to have spilled over from his Bengal days.

RUNNING BACKS
Delone Carter – IND: Despite the Colts falling flat on their faces in a 62-7 drubbing against the Saints, Carter was one of the lone bright spots, rushing for 89 yards and a touchdown. Joseph Addai wound up aggravating his hamstring injury in the first quarter and never returned. With the game out of hand so early, there really wasn’t much of a reason to bring him back in. Donald Brown was the third stringer, chipping in 47 rushing yards, but Carter is clearly the handcuff to have if you are an Addai owner. The problem is that the rushing yards are going to be hard to come by with Curtis Painter under center.

Monterio Hardesty – CLE: Subbing for an injured Peyton Hillis, Hardesty racked up 95 rushing yards in the win over the Seahawks. The bad news was it took him 33 carries to do so, which gave him a pathetic 2.9 ypc average. With the 49ers run defense coming up in Week 8, Hardesty looks like a pretty iffy flex option if Hillis’ hamstring isn’t fully healed.

Michael Bush – OAK: Bush was the lone bright spot on a Raiders offense that couldn’t get anything going in the loss to the Chiefs. After Darren McFadden was knocked out with a foot sprain early in the first quarter, Bush carried the ball 17 times for 99 yards. The Raiders have a Week-8 bye, which will help McFadden recover, but owners should know by now that Bush is the highest-rated handcuff in the league.

Mike Tolbert – SD: Just when I thought Tolbert’s value was dead, he went ahead and outplayed Ryan Mathews to the tune of 58 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Jets. Mathews, who had been getting more snaps at the goal-line recently, was also pulled for Tolbert. The problem with Tolbert is that this type of game hasn’t happened for weeks, leaving him as nothing more than a weak flex option going forward.

Marion Barber – CHI: After being MIA earlier in the season with a calf injury, Barber has scored a touchdown in 3 of the past 4 games. He doesn’t do a whole lot between the 20s, however. If you take out his 29-yard run against the Buccaneers, he would have ran for 10 yards off 5 carries. Touchdown-heavy league owners may consider Barber a flex option going forward, but he is nowhere near being a strong handcuff for Matt Forte owners.

Kregg Lumpkin  – TB: Earnest Graham fell to the ground untouched against the Bears, which wasn’t good news right from the start. What was initially considered only an ankle sprain turned out to be a torn Achilles’ tendon, which will knock Graham out for the year. The Bucs have a Week-8 bye. But if LeGarrette Blount (knee) can’t go Week 9, Lumpkin will be next in line. He wasn’t great on the ground, rushing 8 times for 15 yards, but he did catch 6 passes. There is also a chance that Tampa Bay will be on the hunt for a free agent upgrade if Blount shows he isn’t ready after the weekend.

Alfonso Smith – ARI: Once again, Beanie Wells owners may have to place Wells on the bench after he suffered a knee sprain against the Steelers. Smith managed 17 yards off 5 carries and also scored in the second quarter in relief. Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t know whether Wells will miss Week 8 or not, so Smith should be on the radar for all owners heading into the weekend’s game against the Ravens. Hopefully, we will know more by Monday afternoon or Tuesday at the earliest.

Knowshon Moreno – DEN: With Willis McGahee expected to visit a hand specialist on Monday regarding his (fractured hand), Moreno’s fantasy value gets another spike going into Week 8. Subbing in for McGahee on Sunday, Moreno rushed for 28 yards and also caught 2 passes for another 10. McGahee could miss multiple weeks.

Bernard Scott – CIN: After weeks and weeks of speculation, Cedric Benson is finally expected to serve his one-game suspension this week against the Seahawks. Benson owners and those looking for running back help should pick Scott up as a bye-week fillin. Just be aware that they are facing a very stout Seattle rushing defense that only gave up 2.9 yards a carry to Browns RB Monterio Hardesty Sunday.

WIDE RECEIVERS:
Antonio Brown – PIT: With Hines Ward dealing with an ankle injury, Brown racked up career highs in receptions and yards with 7 catches for 102 yards against the Cardinals. If Ward sits Week 8 against the Patriots, Brown is a must-have option in all leagues.

Demaryius Thomas – DEN: I talked about Thomas in-depth last week after he was expected to make his debut yesterday against the Dolphins, but he is still only owned in 9% of Yahoo leagues. Eric Decker and Eddie Royal got the start against the Dolphins, but Thomas proved to be Tim Tebow’s favorite target, leading the team with 10 targets (3 caught) for 27 yards and a touchdown. Thomas could wind up being the better receiver of the three between he, Royal and Decker.

Danario Alexander – STL: It shouldn’t come as a surprise that newly-acquired Brandon Lloyd was the main target in the passing game. But what was somewhat surprising was Brandon Gibson being a healthy scratch over Alexander against the Cowboys. Alexander finished with a measly 2 catch for 9 yards, but much of that can be attributed to the fact that AJ Feeley had to make the start over an injured Sam Bradford (ankle). Alexander could have some flex value if he stays in the starting lineup. He was targeted 6 times.

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe – MIN: One of the greatest things about a quarterback change is that guys who have withered away to the fantasy wasteland have a good chance to come back to life. Ray mentioned Michael Jenkins above. But another guy who benefited from Christian Ponder under center was Shiancoe. A talented tight end is a rookie quarterback’s best friend. And that is exactly what Shiancoe was against the Packers after tying with Jenkins for a team-leading 8 targets for 4 catches, 45 receiving yards and a score. Shiancoe could be a pick up for those missing their starter on the Week-8 bye.

Now that we are a quarter of the way through a team’s football season, I want to give praise to those players who have helped fantasy owners and a big middle finger to those who have wasted our time.

Matthew Stafford has finally reach QB1 status going into Week Five.

RISERS

QUARTERBACKS
Cam Newton – CAR: I know I have mentioned Newton’s name in my previous Risers and Fallers articles, but I can’t help but give the guy all the credit in the world for how well he has played. Even though the Panthers are 1-3, Newton is averaging 346.5 passing yards a game and has nine total touchdowns, as he is also averaging a little over 33 rushing yards per contest. And the fact that he is doing all of this without barely a rushing game to help him is remarkable.

Matthew Stafford – DET: We all knew Stafford could be a player if healthy, but he’s been on a fantasy tear through the first four weeks of the season, averaging almost three touchdowns a game. The biggest improvement on the Lions offense has been the offensive line, which has allowed just five sacks (all in Week Three). Stafford has finally taken that next step and is a bonafide QB1 for the rest of the year.

RUNNING BACKS
Matt Forte – CHI: Forte has been doing it all in 2011, averaging 81 yards on the ground per game. But what has been his strong point is in the passing game. So far, he has totaled 26 receptions and is averaging 77.5 receiving yards a game, which is No. 1 amongst running backs. In one-point PPR leagues, Forte is easily the No. 1 running back going into Week Five. He recently admitted that his contract was a distraction, so imagine what he could be like once he gets a new extension?

Darren Sproles – NO: Still only third on the official depth chart, Sproles is clearly the running back to own in all fantasy leagues. He only has fifteen carries, compared to Mark Ingram’s 53 and Pierre Thomas’ 27, but he leads the team in yards a carry with 8.9. And as a receiving option, fuhgettaboutit. He currently leads the team with 26 receptions and is averaging 56 receiving yards a game. And he’s doing this in a triple-player timeshare. If Thomas or Ingram ever missed time with an injury, Sproles could be bigger than he is now.

Wes Welker has literally won fantasy games all by himself.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Wes Welker – NE: Not only is Welker the No. 1 fantasy receiver. But in PPR leagues, he’s the No. 1 fantasy player, above guys like Aaron Rodgers and Calvin Johnson. Welker is a PPR machine, averaging ten per game and he has three 100-yard games under his belt. And have I mentioned he’s been scoring at will? In 2010, Welker racked up seven scores. He has five already. It’s a safe bet that if you asked which player has helped owners the most this year, Welker’s name will be mentioned the most.

Stevie Johnson – BUF: Johnson hasn’t been blowing up the stats like a WR1, but he has put up some strong game while dealing with a groin injury. The guy many thought was a one-year wonder has averaged 78 receiving yards a game and tallied three touchdowns. His stats could decrease a tad once the weather in Buffalo starts getting colder (that lakefront snow is a bitch), but Johnson will do just enough to make him a worthy WR2 for the rest of the year.

TIGHT ENDS
Greg Olsen – CAR: The Panthers are using Olsen the way Chicago should have; as a pass-catching weapon. Through four games, Olsen has averaged 4 catches a game with 54.8 receiving yards. Not exactly superman stats, but still worthy of a low-end TE1 start.

Tony Gonzalez – ATL: Gonzo is another name that I have mentioned in the past, but he continues to get it done even with Julio Jones taking away more targets. After catching six scores in all of 2010, Gonzo already has four through four games. Not bad for a 35 year old.

FALLERS

QUARTERBACKS
Ben Roethlisberger: With an average of 287 passing yards a game, Big Ben is still getting his fantasy stats in terms of yardage, but his 3:5 TD:INT ratio is awful. The lack of talent on the offensive line and Rashard Mendenhall looking like he’s running through mud isn’t helping. Reothlisberger is a QB2 until his touchdowns start getting more frequent.

Jay Cutler – CHI: While Matt Forte has been getting it done in the backfield, Cutler has been laying on his back more times than not. During the first quarter of the season, Cutler ranks No. 2 in sacks taken with fifteen, second only to Sam Bradford (18). Cutler could easily be a QB1. But like Roethlisberger, he’s getting zero help from his offensive line and Mike Martz’s play-calling will always make interceptions inevitable (Cutler had fifty in 2009-2010). Cutler is nothing more than a QB2 without much upside.

Shonn Greene may very well end up as the biggest fantasy bust for the 2011 season. Or at least one of the biggest.

RUNNING BACKS
Shonn Greene – NYJ: This will be harsh, but Greene is beyond bad. Even in a good matchup, he can barely maintain a 3.0 ypc average. I had predicted that Greene would finally break out after disappointing last year. But the only difference between 2011 and 2010 is LaDainian Tomlinson is a year older. With a meager one rushing touchdown to his name, Greene is nothing more than a low-end flex. He has a great matchup against the Patriots, so at east owners have that to look forward to.

Chris Johnson – TEN: While I do expect better things from Johnson going forward, he’s been killing fantasy owners thus far. As if the lockout wasn’t bad enough, Johnson’s holdout wasn’t making things any easier. Despite averaging a measly 75 yards from scrimmage a game, Johnson insists that his slow start isn’t because of rust.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Percy Harvin – MIN: I remember making a post-draft trade for Harvin thinking he was going to be a huge part of the Vikings offense. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Most of Harvin’s lack of stats haven’t been his fault. The team is simply not using him enough. I’m hoping his 42 receiving yards and 67 rushing yards from Week Four are a sign of things to come. Because if they aren’t, the WR2 tag I had on Harvin in the preseason is going to make me look pretty bad.

DeSean Jackson – PHI: While Jackson has put up big numbers this year, his consistency has been awful. He got me over 20 points in Week One, totaled ten in Weeks Two-Three and got me another 20+ in Week Four. For a guy who was tabbed as a WR1, that’s not that good. There are a couple things not in Jackson’s favor. First are the double teams. When you’re considered the passing offense’s best weapon, you’re going to get covered….a lot. Second is Jackson’s contract. There have been rumors that Jackson is playing not to get hurt and he even has teammates talking to the media about it. While I think Jackson’s total numbers will be rock solid, the up-and-down play of the entire team doesn’t help matters.

Still sidelined with a foot injury, Antonio Gates hasn't help fantasy owners outside of Week One's game.

TIGHT ENDS
Antonio Gates – SD: Remember when Gates put up seven receptions and 74 receiving yards in Week One? Us Gates owners thought we had it made. Little did we know Gates’ previous foot injury would get in the way, leaving him stat-less from Week Two to now. Gates resting until after the Chargers’ Week-Six bye is doing nothing for us owners who have clamored to find his replacement.

Kellen Winslow – TAM: Winslow had a good Week One with six catches for 66 yards against the Lions, but it’s been all downhill from there. Lacking play-making ability because of all the knee surgeries, Winslow is a shell of his former self. He will have big games here and there, but he’s nothing more than a TE2 with close to zero upside. And this was a guy that many experts had ranked as a top-10 fantasy option in the offseason.

Fred Jackson has been a hot commodity this year.

It’s amazing what one year of fantasy football can do. Last year, the guys to have were Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson. Now one year later, we are talking about guys like Fred Jackson and Beanie Wells. It just goes to show you that owners should go into the regular season with a clean slate and a clear mind, especially those who passed up Wells because of his pedestrian 2010.

Below are my running back rankings going into Week Two.

TOP FIVE WEEK-TWO MATCHUPS (MUST START)

1. Adrian Peterson (MIN) vs. Detroit: If the Vikings want to stop Stafford and Co. from destroying them through the air, they are going to have to keep the offense on the field as long as possible. Give AD the ball 25 times and they should keep it close.

2. Rashard Mendenhall (PIT) @ Indianapolis: People probably looked at last week’s box score and wondered why Isaac Redman got so many carries against Seattle. Don’t worry Mendy owners. Redman got some playing time because the Steelers were up by so much so late. Facing a soft Colts rushing defense, Mendy should have a big day in Week Three.

3. Ray Rice (BAL) @ St. Louis: Rice faces a Rams Defense that ranks dead last in the league against the run, giving up a whopping 177.5 on the ground. They also give up an average of 5.1 yards a carry. Rice should have a field day this week. Rice could easily be the No. 1 fantasy running back when Week Three is done.

4. LeSean McCoy (PHI) vs. NY Giants: Through two games, McCoy has averaged almost 127 total yards from scrimmage and has tallied four total touchdowns. He had a field day with the Giants last year, so expect another big game in the Eagles’ home opener.

5. Michael Turner (ATL) @ TB: Adrian Peterson had a big game against the Bucs defense last weekend and even Jahvid Best was able to do damage against them on the ground back in Week One. Coming off a big Sunday night against the Eagles, Turner should have a big Week Three.

Peyton Hillis owners will gladly take two-straight games of strong fantasy production.

BEST OF THE REST:

Keep An Eye On:
Dexter McCluster (KC) @ SD
McCluster is an interesting option to keep in mind if you are absolutely desperate. Through two weeks, he has racked up 58 total yards from scrimmage per game and has nine receptions on the year. Thomas Jones will get the start and most of the love from the fantasy football community because of that. And while McCluster’s size (5’8′ /170) puts him at a disadvantage, he could be a steal if you can stash him for at least one week to see what he does in Week Three.

Miles Austin had a whopping 15 targets in Week Two.

Week Two saw a wild number in the targets department. Cowboys WR Miles Austin and Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin led the charge with a total of 30 targets, 15 apiece. They say that offenses are starting to put up big numbers in the passing game and those numbers, along with the rest, clearly show that trend.

Bears RB Matt Forte led all running backs with 14 targets, which is almost unheard of. So while he may not get a lot of rushing yards every week, the fact that the Bears use him so much in the passing game makes him PPR gold.

At the tight end spot, it’s really no surprise that Cowboys TE Jason Witten was head of the pack with 14 targets. QB Tony Romo loves throwing to Witten, but his and Austin’s looks increased with the absence of WR Dez Bryant. Even with Bryant expected back for Week Three, expect Witten to get a big load (I said load) for the next few weeks with Austin out with a hamstring injury.

After a strong Week-One performance against the Saints, Aaron Rodgers is our No. 1 fantasy quarterback this week.

Your usual fantasy guru Ray Tannock is taking a break from the rankings this week, so I am here to give you the lowdown on what’s going to go down in Week Two. We had a lot of surprises at quarterback in Week One. The biggest one, obviously, being Cam Newton’s breakout performance against the Cardinals. Things should settle down this weekend, but we could have a surprise or two that pop up out of nowhere.

Before I start, I would like to congratulate Ray for coming in first place in Fantasy Football Crystal Ball’s Week One Accuracy Score for Quarterbacks last week. Way to go RAY!!!!!!!

Below are my quarterback rankings going into Week Two.

TOP FIVE WEEK-TWO MATCHUPS (MUST START)

1. Aaron Rogers (GB) @ CAR: Is there any reason to not put Rodgers at No. 1 this week? I know Tom Brady had that huge game against Miami, but my money is on Rodgers to lead the charge against a Carolina Defense that gave up 309 yards and two scores against Kevin Kolb.

2. Tom Brady (NE) vs. SD: Putting Brady any lower than No. 2 would be ridiculous. The guy simply doesn’t stop at putting up big games. Hell, he even made Deion Branch look like a stud Monday night. The Chargers Defense will come back down to Earth after facing Donovan McNabb in Week One.

3. Michael Vick (PHI) @ ATL: Vick didn’t throw for very many yards (187) against the Rams, but his two passing touchdowns and 98 rushing yards made up for it. Vick showed he still has plenty left in the legs. He will need that in, what figures to be, a very emotional game against his old team the Falcons in their house.

4. Matthew Stafford (DET) vs. KC: Stafford had a huge Week One, throwing for three touchdowns against the Bucs. Kansas City didn’t have an answer for Ryan Fitzpatrick. And after losing Eric Berry to a torn ACL, Stafford should have his way with the Chiefs’ secondary.

5. Philip Rivers (SD) @ NE: The Chargers’ receivers were held in check by the Vikings, but Rivers still had a huge fantasy day, using both Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews in the passing game. If Chad Henne can look like a Pro Bowler against the Patriots D, Rivers should have a field day in Foxboro.

Kevin Kolb had an excellent regular-season debut.

Despite throwing for two scores in Week One against the Bengals, Colt McCoy is better off on your bench.

Ravens RB Ray Rice gets the nod this week as our No. 1 fantasy running back going into Week Two

Week One seems like a distant memory and it’s only Wednesday. I have gotten several emails and we have gotten a ton of running back questions in the forum regarding who to pick up and who to dump this week. Even though many players, like Browns RB Peyton Hillis, disappointed, it’s still too soon to gauge how good or bad a player is going to be this year.

Below are my running back rankings going into Week Two.

TOP FIVE WEEK-TWO MATCHUPS (MUST START)

1. Ray Rice (BAL) @ Tennessee: Rice was a top-5 running back going into Week One, but I didn’t think he would explode against, what is supposed to be, a strong Steelers run defense. Rice is the top guy this week going against a Titans Defense that had some trouble containing Maurice Jones-Drew.

2. Adrian Peterson (MIN) vs. Tampa Bay: AD had a so-so Week One mainly due to the fact that Donovan McNabb and the passing game couldn’t get anything going. Peterson should do better this week at home.

3. Darren McFadden (OAK) @ BUF: Jamaal Charles averaged 5.6 yards a carry against the Bills Defense last week. Add McFadden’s performance Monday night against Denver and we have the makings of two-straight strong fantasy outings

4. LeSean McCoy (PHI) @ Atlanta: As expected, McCoy was heavily used in both the running game and passing game against the Rams. Playing indoors will have an impact on his Week-Two performance. I expect to see him duplicate his numbers from last weekend. And I think we can finally say Ronnie Brown isn’t going to be a bigger part of the offense after he carried the ball four times for seven yards.

5. Peyton Hillis (CLE) @ Indianapolis: Hillis only ran for 57 yards against the Bengals, but he did chip in six receptions. The Colts Defense made Ben Tate look like a stud. I fully expect Hillis to bounce back this week.
