Waldo, a lifetime member, (thanks Waldo!) in preparation for this draft asked us a great question in the forum, "At what point do you change your draft plan because of a perceived run on a position?" Waldo is in a 2 quarterback (QB) league and his fantasy football draft is right around the corner. He also has the privilege of knowing his league mates tendencies because he's been drafting with these guys for years. So how in the world do you handle a two quarterback league? Stock up on QB early? Stock up on RB? Do you concern yourself about position runs? Let's look at Waldo's league, talk about position runs, cheat sheets and finally who I like round by round.
Things to know about Waldos league: they have a wild and hairy points system that basically pays huge dividends to the top performing players - but this year they threw in a new wrinkle, 1.5 points per 10 rushing yards.... look out!! Not to mention every 5 pass completions = 1 point for the quarterback. This is just the tip of the iceberg in this league. Players get points if they point to the sky when they score a TD, quarterbacks get points for licking their fingers too, it's insane. For those of you with bonus point league yours is probably similar.
PASSING
Every 25 passing yards = 1 Point
1Every 5 pass completions = 1 Point
TD Pass = 4 Points, 40+ yard TD pass bonus = 4 Point
50+ yard TD pass bonus = 5 Points, Interceptions Thrown -2
2pt Passing Conversion = 2 Points, 300-399 yard passing game = 2 Points
400+ yard passing game = 5 PointRUSHING
Every 10 rushing yards = 1.5 points which is 50 extra points for a 1,000 yard back.
TD Rush = 6 Points
40+ yard TD rush bonus = 5 Points, 50+ yard TD rush bonus = 6 Points
2pt Rushing Conversion = 2 Points, 100-199 yard rushing game = 7 Points
200+ yard rushing game = 10 PointsRECEIVING
Every 10 receiving yards = 1 Point
1Each reception (REC)=1, TD Reception = 6 Point
40+ yard TD rec bonus = 2 Point, 50+ yard TD rec bonus = 5 Point
2pt Receiving Conversion = 2 Point, 100-199 yard receiving game = 5 Point, 200+ yard receiving game = 10 Point
Position Runs During The Draft
So you're sitting their with the 8th pick in a 10 team league, the top 6 RB and top 2 QB have been drafted, what do you do? Or let's say you're the third pick and the first two teams draft RB, do you draft RB or QB?
Your mom once asked you, "if your friends jumped off a bridge are you going to jump off too?" an obvious rhetorical question that never stopped me from being a dumb ass hell raiser.
Don't worry about picking from a position because you see everyone running on it. What you want to do is draft the best player available based on the positional cheat sheets you printed out here at Fantasy Knuckleheads. If you're the third pick and 2 RB are taken, then pick whoever you have valued highest. It doesn't matter what everyone is doing at THAT MOMENT, but it does matter what you think will happen the following round(s).
Knowing Your League History
In 2013, Waldo's league drafted in the following manner:
- RD1 - 3QB, 7RB, 2WR,
- RD2 - 3QB, 8RB, 1WR
- RD3 - 2QB, 2RB, 7WR, 1TE
- RD4 - 3QB, 5RB, 3WR,1TE
- RD5 - 3QB, 1RB, 6WR, 2TE
- RD6 - 3QB, 2RB, 5WR, 1TE, 1D
As we can see here, the top tier RB and QB are all gone in the first round, and rightfully so in a league that starts 2 quarterbacks and the scoring favors the top tie QB.
By round two the massacre on RB and QB continues. Like piranhas these guys feed off middle tier players passing on gobs of STUDS in the WR Tier 1. Man can I join this league, please? Whats the buy in?
By round three people have slowed their roll but one thing I'm sure of, RB is very thin and people are likely to reach at RB in this league. So if you're high on a running back that has a 4th round ADP, you may as well toss that ADP out the window in this league and be thinking 3rd rounder. But at WR, ADP has a huge drop. The WR Tier is being abandoned and moving their ADP in a positive manner. Guys with a 1st round ADP can be had in the 2nd and maybe third round.
So what does this tell us?
WR is undervalued and we can exploit that...
How I would draft in your Two Quarterback League
I'm gonna break this down first as if you had picks 1 -3. Then as if you have picks 4 - 8. Followed by picks 9 - 10.
1st through 3rd Rounds
Round 1: Brees, Rodgers or McCoy - McCoy has a super friendly RB schedule - makes me dream of his 17 touchdown season. My dream team tested with bunches of mocks - I know you're thinking DUDE my QB's suck - but I ran the numbers and this team is a scoring machine. It seem every time I mocked and drafted McCoy first, followed by QB then RB again, I ended up a solid unit.

4th through 7th Rounds
I had the best results avoiding QB in rounds 1 through 3 when I had the middle round picks. I like this team here, just need Bell to produce and maybe lay off the weed... dumb-ass.

INTERMISSION
8th through 10th Rounds
I love the 8th through 10th round in your league. It seems really hard to go wrong here. If you go back to back QB with your first two picks, no problem. Or how about abandoning the QB until rounds 7/8 and getting Palmer and Tannehill, still no problem! Or even wait until 3/4 for your QB - its really hard to lose here.
