NFL Free Agency: Love at First Sight or Fatal Attraction?

March 12, 2013 by Kurt Turner

The NFL free agency extravaganza can be confusing to follow at the very least. Just when you think you know what’s going on, the unexpected can habitually become reality.

Sometimes, these sudden deals are the by-product of either a “love at first sight” scenario or a curious version of “fatal attraction”.

So how do we determine which is which?

To be honest, only time has that ability. We as fans, writers, pundits, etc., only possess the art of speculation, nothing more.

But more often than not—for writers anyway—speculation is a fun venture, and today we’re going to take a  twisted look at some current NFL free agency news.

Why not? It’s better than the same old hum-drum, right?

The Love at First Sight Scenario:

This is an easy and adaptable scenario to consider. From a football standpoint, there are plenty of growing examples of the romanticism behind a “love at first sight” scenario.

Take Bruce Arians, head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, and current free agent RB Rashard Mendenhall.

There have been plenty of rumors linking the possibility of the two rejoining in Arizona, but now we have something chewy to stick in our mouths via The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

However, it makes sense that Arians may target Mendenhall. The two did work together for nearly four years in Pittsburgh and Arians is familiar with Mendenhall’s skill sets.

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry…” or in this case goodbye.

The Fatal Attraction Scenario:

Ah, yes. Many of us remember the movie Fatal Attraction, and again, this is another adaptable scenario when looking at the NFL free agency market.

I mean really, who could forget the loveable Alex Forrest, hmm? Glenn Close did a stand up job portraying the psychopathic train wreck of a love-struck individual who, after learning she wasn’t going to get what she wanted, threw such a raging fit, it even made the wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man seem pedestrian.

Percy Harvin, anyone?

But even though Percy Harvin became sort of a train-wreck himself before staining the carpet in Minnesota, his invaluable abilities should prove useful in Seattle.

That is, unless the bro-mance between Pete Carroll and Percy Harvin is destine for implosion, in which case the whole acquisition will be rendered comical.

See? Only time will tell.

This year's blockbuster hit!

Roll the Credits:

We are all basically the movie patrons when it comes to the NFL free agency market. We wait with bated breath to find out which scenario will play out, and/or which story will take center stage.

Some of us hope for a happy ending; one that constitutes a love at first sight scenario, while others hold optimism towards a nasty fatal attraction headline.

Ironically enough, the NFL free agency market always find a way to satisfy everyone’s hunger better than the likes of a Snickers bar.

Reggie Bush, Wes Welker, Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings and yes Rashard Mendenhall are some of this year’s “cast members” in what is shaping up to be a very good show.

At 4:01 PM today, you better have your popcorn ready.
