When Adrian Peterson says something, the brass at the Minnesota Vikings had better be listening. Peterson tweeted Wednesday night that Michael Vick would “instantly make the Vikings a playoff team”. It is an interesting thought especially with Vick available as a free agent. The question is whether or not the Vikings want to make a move like that or not.
Vick will be 34 years old before the 2014 season begins and really doesn’t appear to be a fit in Norv Turner’s offense but if Peterson wants Vick to come to town, some changes may need to be made to accommodate the style of play Vick has. Turner would likely prefer a pocket passer as opposed to a scrambling quarterback like Vick but at this point, there is no reason why the team can’t think about making this move.
They could avoid the idea of drafting a quarterback with the No. 8 overall pick and can work on fixing the defense up. Vick does have injury problems though and rarely gets through an entire season healthy so drafting a young quarterback or having Christian Ponder ready to go at all times would be essential for this move to happen. Vick played in just seven games last season for the Philadelphia Eagles and hasn’t played in more than 13 games in a single season since 2006.
The normal names are going to be out there for the Vikings in the second round if they wanted to wait on a quarterback until then. Derek Carr may still be there though unlikely. Jimmy Garoppolo’s stock has been soaring and may not get out of the first round now. Could someone like Aaron Murray in the fourth round be a better idea to back up a possible Vick signing?
It is something that must be monitored closely especially with free agency opening up early next week. Vick may have something left and Peterson’s career probably has another three or four years left in it so a rebuilding project isn’t going to work for him especially coming off a playoff berth in 2012. Will the team listen to their best player and go after Vick or does new head coach Mike Zimmer have other ideas? The answer to that question will likely be found out by this time next week.
