Emilio Bonifacio, Ty Wigginton and 5 Multi-Position Waiver-Wire Sleepers

July 19, 2011 by Greg Brosh

Limiting yourself to a bench full of one-position players can make it hard to adjust your lineup in the case of an injury.

Therefore, players who can play two, three or even four positions have an added value.

Here are five versatile players, owned in 55% or less of Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball leagues, who can be valuable additions to your bench.

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, 3B/SS/OF, Florida Marlins (49% owned) – Bonifacio has been tearing it up on the basepaths lately and has 18 steals on the season. He’s also hitting .290. He won’t hit for power or drive in many runs, but he’s a versatile speedster and deserves a spot on your bench.
  2. Ty Wigginton, 1B/2B/3B/OF, Colorado Rockies (53%) – Wigginton is one of the most versatile players in all of fantasy baseball. Eligible at four positions, Wigginton is able to work his way into the lineup in many ways. He also hits for power and has 13 home runs and 38 RBI on the year. Using him as an injury replacement for a couple weeks would be a smart move.
  3. Daniel Murphy, 1B/2B/3B/OF, New York Mets (55%) – Murphy is another super versatile player. He doesn’t hit for as much power as Wigginton (six home runs), but drives in plenty of runs (38 so far) and is hitting .312 right now. Not bad for a guy who can play four positions.
  4. Alexi Casilla, 2B/SS, Minnesota Twins (16%) – Casilla scores a lot of runs (46 so far this season) and has some speed (13 stolen bases). But, that’s about all he brings to the table. He only hits for a middle-of-the-road average and has no power. But, if you need an extra shortstop, he can fill in at a time of need.
  5. Mitch Moreland, 1B/OF, Texas Rangers (36%) – Moreland has been productive all year. He’s hitting .267 with 12 home runs and 27 RBI in a potent Rangers offense. He doesn’t get many RBI opportunities though, with Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz driving in most of the runners. But, he’s a versatile player who could be a valuable backup for your fantasy team.
