Fantasy Baseball 2011: Fernando Salas, Kevin Gregg and 5 Waiver-Wire Closers

May 26, 2011 by Greg Brosh

There aren’t a lot of closers to go around in fantasy baseball. This is especially true in 12-team leagues.

But, there are still some guys picking up saves who aren’t owned in as many leagues as they probably should be.

Here are five current closers, at least one of whom should still be available in your league.

  1. Fernando Salas, St. Louis Cardinals (59% owned) – Salas is apparently sharing save opportunities with Eduardo Sanchez in Tony La Russa’s bullpen. But, Salas appears to have a leg up on Sanchez. Salas has eight saves to Sanchez’s five, and has a lower ERA. Plus, Salas is more accurate with his pitches.
  2. Brandon League, Seattle Mariners (61%) – League has a 5.85 ERA, but he is racking up the saves. He currently has 12 in the absence of regular closer David Aardsma. Aardsma will probably be out for another month or so. That means League will continue to have value. It’d be nice if he could lower that ERA though.
  3. Sergio Santos, Chicago White Sox (68%) – Matt Thornton is slowly regaining form, but it’ll be hard for Ozzie Guillen to take Santos out of the closer role now. Santos has seven saves and a much lower ERA than Thornton. I don’t see why Guillen would make the switch unless Santos starts struggling.
  4. Jordan Walden, Los Angeles Angels (73%) – Walden has racked up 10 saves for the Angels and has a 2.70 ERA. He’s showing a lot of talent in the closer role, and shouldn’t be in danger of losing the position as long as he continues to succeed.
  5. Kevin Gregg, Baltimore Orioles (68%) – Gregg has an ERA that is higher than you’d typically want from a closer (3.93). And he only has eight saves this season, despite being the O’s full-time closer. But, if you are desperate for saves, Gregg might be worth a look.
