Fantasy Baseball 2011: Josh Tomlin, Justin Morneau and 5 Players to Give Up On

June 16, 2011 by Greg Brosh

It’s hard to tell when it’s time to say goodbye to one of your fantasy baseball players. There are certain guys you have an emotional attachment to, and certain guys whose numbers look deceivingly good.

Knowing when to say goodbye will only make your team better, and I’m here to help. Here are five players who you should strongly consider either dropping or trading.

  1. Josh Tomlin, SP, Cleveland Indians – Tomlin’s ERA has recently climbed above 4.00. He also hasn’t picked up a win in his last two starts. He’s allowed six earned runs in each of his last three starts. As the Indians continue to struggle, Tomlin’s struggles will probably continue. If you can trade him, do it. If not, you might be wise to just drop him.
  2. Justin Morneau, 1B, Minnesota Twins – Morneau just found his way to the DL for the struggling Twins. When he comes off the DL, it’ll take him awhile to find his groove again, if he ever does. So far this season, he’s only hitting .225 with four homers and 21 RBI.
  3. Matt Joyce, OF, Tampa Bay Rays – Joyce hasn’t homered in his last 10 games and only has three RBI in that stretch. He’s also seen his average plummet from .356 to .322. He still has some trade value though, so see if you can get a more consistent player for him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see his average drop below .300 soon.
  4. Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates – Alvarez has been on the DL for a while and has suffered a setback that will keep him out until the All-Star Break. Right now, he’s not even worth a DL spot on your team. When he comes back, there’s no reason to think he’ll be able to improve his .208 average.
  5. Bartolo Colon, SP, New York Yankees – After an outstanding start to this season, Colon finally found his way to the DL. It seemed as if everything was going perfectly for Colon so far this season. Now that it isn’t, expect him to struggle when he comes back from this injury.
