After instantly providing a noticeable lift in the Niners' offense in the second half against the Texans in Week Seven, none of our sources was surprised in the least the next day when Alex Smith was named the team's starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. And the way we're hearing it, none of them will be surprised at all if the Niners' offense takes on more of a wide-open passing-oriented identity moving forward with Smith under center. Head coach Mike Singletary actually hinted as much in his press conference with the local media the day after Smith nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages in Houston. The Niners' head coach succinctly summed up his thoughts with the following comment: "We're going to do whatever we need to do to win. Three receiver, four receiver, five receiver, I don't care."
