Gay Athletes Don't Fit In What Is Perceived As A Homophobic NFL

Esera Tuaolo, who was born in Hawaii and was a second-round draft choice by Green Bay after he played collegiately at Oregon State, said there are more than 10 homosexual players in the league today. "I'm not going to tell you how many," he said. "The guys who are in contact with me and there are others who are anonymous." Because there are 1,696 players on the active rosters of the 32 teams, it is statistically probable that Tuaolo may be underestimating the number of gay NFL players.

I'm all for gays in the league but I have to admit that if one of my favourite players came out of the closet I'd be fairly thrown off.

I guess an ideal situation for the NFL would be if Brett Favre came out (not that I'm saying he's gay) because the critics would be pre-silenced and he's already a part of the mythos of the league in such a big way that him being gay (hypothetically) would really open the door for other (hypothetical) gay athletes.

Just ask Kordell Stewart. Rumors that he was gay haunted him throughout his career and some say that's why his career wasn't prolonged further.

Who cares, though? Seriously, what difference does it make if an athlete is gay or straight? If it's not performance-related, and it's not a crime, then I don't care.

kordell playing full time Qb ruined kordells career

Who cares? I understand being afraid to be yourself, but why are there some gay people that feel that everyone needs to acknowledge their presence wherever they are? I know this may sound hypocritical, because when I was younger I often felt the need to announce occasionally if I was the only black guy in a particular setting.

    If that analogy helps...

    That's exactly what ruined Kordelll's career...:icon_rolleyes:

Bill Cowher let Kordell play QB full-time instead of making him be the athlete that he was...

btw - would you happen to have a source for the "some that say that's why his career wasn't prolonged further?"

he went on to play with the Bears and then with the Ravens...actually playing for the Ravens is kind of gay...but nonetheless, the rumors didn't end his career...lol.
