On the same day that Browns running back Jamal Lewis said he thought coach Eric Mangini was working the team too hard, a Browns practice squad player named Keith Grennan ruptured his patellar tendon during a post-practice "opportunity drill" and will be out at least eight months. A source with direct knowledge of the incident confirmed that the injury happened during the "opportunity" period -- a post-practice time when Mangini puts practice squad players and rookies through additional drills to give them the chance to impress coaches. Rookie running back James Davis was hurt in the same drills and when Mangini was asked about the concept of the opportunity drills in general earlier this year he defended them, saying they were always supervised and a controlled environment. "I've been part of this everywhere I've been," Mangini said. "Usually the rookies stay out, the young guys stay out. Often times, other guys will stay out if they want to. It's not limited to those guys, other people are welcome too, but it's nice because it gives them really focused attention. It's designed to help them have the best chance to bump up."

I'm pretty sure it was the sound of things going from bad to worse for Eric Mangini.

This is a perfect example of outstanding football coaching. Someone should give mangenius a raise. I'm sure by the end of the week he'll make another good football decision by persuading management to sign Larry Johnson to a long term deal.
