Coach Todd Haley Doesn’t Think QB Matt Cassel Is Chiefs Problem

Todd Haley hasn't left much doubt, and he started this week by trying to quiet suggestions that Matt Cassel isn't up to the job as the Chiefs' starting quarterback. No, Cassel didn't respond well a week after being benched in a blowout loss to Denver. No, he didn't avoid the one thing that Haley has suggested is a quarterback's mortal sin - failing to protect the football - in Sunday's loss to Buffalo. The losses keep coming, and the questions have grown louder, but Haley reiterated during his weekly news conference that Cassel's ability and long-term prospects are not among the Chiefs' many shortcomings. "I thought Matt did some real good things in that game," Haley said of Kansas City's 16-10 loss to the Bills. "It's easy to pile on the quarterback."

I dont watch the chiefs very much so correct me if I am wrong, but throught this season hearing people talk about the chiefs it would seem that Haley is the problem.......... yes no?

Haley is obviously learning on the job....he makes strange decisions quite frequently and there's no consistency in his decision making process. I don't get the sense that there is any gameplan or identity with this team and that is the most troubling issue. Buffalo was having a problem stopping Jamal Charles yet we threw the ball 43 times? Cassel has proven he can be an effective QB in this league with a good supporting cast. We need to improve the supporting cast....a lot.

Todd Haley's first mistake was firing Chan Gailey....cause Todd Haley sucks at playcalling. PERIOD. No, it's not entirely Cassel's fault that we suck this year. WR's can't catch the ball even when it's thrown right at them....:icon_redface:

This team was already disfunctional at the start of preseason and then from there it just got worse. The O-line was horribe, but has been better of late. LJ had no more mojo and ran his dumb mouth off and got himself kick off the team. We have had a rotating door 4 WR's. Haley had alot of questionable calls at critical times early on in the season that didnt work out. We cut one of our best defenders Bernard Pollard for a saftey that cant tackle. Our safeties have been rolling out the red carpet on running plays and deep balls. we have a variety pack of linebacker that can see the play. and D-linemen are not strong enough for the veteran O-lines we play every week. so it hasnt been all of Cassels fault. for the short version.

Cassel has been about what I expected, though I really have doubts about his deep ball. Get some talent around him and he'll be, at worst, a manage the game QB. I'm willing to give Haley one more year to see if he'll either hire an OC (Weiss please!) or get better at playcalling.

I don't think Cassel is the issue. He did very well filling in for Brady last year in NE, and that shouldn't be discounted. Given the right team, he can perform.

Haha, what I don't really get is your obsession with Matt Cassel. You take any opportunity to bash the guy. Did you really get that butt hurt when they blasted you last year?

And yes I know you beat them once, but it was his second career start.

Struggles to read defenses, takes to many sacks, throws ducks on throws more than 40 yards, needs to be in the shotgun. Just to name a few.

Not obsessed, just don't like having your boy WC constantly saying I'm wrong about Cassel when the proof is in his work. And he didn't blast the Dolphins kiddo, it was Moss wanting to actually play.

I didn't watch the game but his stat line was 30-43 for 415 yards and 3 tds. Moss had 125 with all 3 tds. Welker had 120 yards receiving. He threw for 170 more that didn't go to those two.

Based on the scouting website you constantly refer to. Of course, everyone has an opinion right.

I said I didn't watch the game, but unless they 30 wide receivers screens, or maybe the Dolphin secondary let them have it because they felt sorry for them or something, the stat line tells me he is capable of being a very productive NFL quarterback.

Yes he holds the ball too long but so does Roethlisberger and no one is bashing Ben all the time. I expect that this can be fixed.
