Romeo Crennel, the former Giants assistant coach and the director of the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning defenses, is expected to be the next man up in the GIants' defensive coordinator search. The Giants have contacted the 62-year-old Crennel to let him know they're interested in him, and he's told them he's interested in them too, according to two sources familiar with the Giants' plans. His agent, Joe Linta, told the Daily News that Crennel "is interested" in the job and confirmed that they have heard from the Giants. But he added that Crennel won't be back from his vacation until Monday so nothing will happen until then. Source: New York Daily News
Interesting I wouldnt like it If I were a Giants fan. I dont think they should move to a 3-4, but they do have Sintim and Canty who are 3-4 players However, moving to a 3-4 means your blowing it all up and starting again. And even if you dont and hire Crennel, most DC's even top ones, struggle when they are running an alignment not suited to them......see Zimmer, Mike/Dallas
Of course he's interested, the more publicity he gains, the more money for him. I still wish the Chiefs would nab him and get rid of Pendergast.
The way I look at it, Green Bay last year switched to a 3-4 when they hired Capers and didn't quite have the personnel either from the start. Which btw, Capers is rumored to be on Coughlin's list on new potential Defensive Coordinators but its doubtful he'll leave the Packers after one season. They made it work when they drafted both Raji and Matthews in the First Round. It took a little while to get it going but they eventually made it very effective. But you have to find that stout Nose Tackle to make the 3-4 work and they don't exactly grow on trees.
And frankly, its not like they had a bad defence last year....the 4-3 is suited to their personnel. It was just this year that they had problems and you don't switch schemes to something less suited to your personnel unless you are taking 2-3 years to rebuild (and the Giants aren't in a position where they need to completely rebuild the defence). They just need to sort a few components and get healthy.
It can work for NY better than it did for Green Bay.......and this is definatly the year to be looking at NT's via FA (Wilfork, Hamton, Frankin, Jolly, Pickett) and/or the draft Williams/Cody What might make it a more difficult transition the GB is that the NFC East is a more established Division right now as opposed to the Central where the Lions and Bears are rebuilding. A transition may guarantee you 3 loss's to the Eagles and Cowboys, whereas with a 4-3, your talent is on par with those two team, and probably better
I don't think Crennel going to the Giants would mean they switch to the 3-4. The Patriots ran the 4-3 for most of his time with the team, and even though the Giant's defense struggled I dont believe they would completely scrap everything.
