NFL Offers Context In Face Mask Ruling

As we visually noted Sunday, Arizona cornerback Michael Adams caught his right index finger on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' facemask, had a penalty been called, Karlos Dansby's game-winning touchdown would have bee nullified. The NFL issued a rules explanation Monday in response to questions about the play. I got my hands on it this afternoon, and its general tone suggests that no illegal act occurred because Adams -- in the judgment of officials -- did not twist, turn or pull Rodgers' facemask. An inadvertent grab is legal in part because of a 2008 rule revision.

What a crock, the refs usually call facemask on anything where a player has another players facemask, but what about hands to the face....seems to me that the refs are just grasping for straws on this one.

i dont know what really to say... nfl always backs up bad calls. tho this call handed the game to the cards, the pack had the chance to win it all on the first play in ot..... imo the refs hecked up big time pack should have got that

everyone knows kurt warner and the cards.... refs at teh homefeild zona totally blew these calls in their favor.... id like to see that play with brady where he pointed that the guy came close to his knee and got a flag and then these last two plays... if it were brady in their instead of rodgers pack be playing next week.

Not to mention that the Packers were called for a roughing the passer on a similar play. The game was very poorly officiated.

I didn't realize how blatantly obvious this penalty was.

What the heck? And it's ten times worse that these douchebags are acting like it was legal and they didn't miss the call.

I'm not into all the whining about losing because of this or any penalties EVER in any game (except that SD/DEN game last year). The ball was fumbled before he touched his mask anyway so the penalty would have just been pure luck on GB's part.

That being said this explanation is pure bullcrap. His fingers were in his face mask all the way to the ground even pulling Rodgers head forward slightly as they fell.

If that was Brady it would have been a 10k fine and flag.

Doesn't matter, a personal foul negates the play and gives the packers 15 yards.

i mean the refs didnt have their eyes on the play, just the ball

Ohhh, I understand and agree with you but it still is not a good excuse though.

Especially since the league is supposed to have taken extra precautions to protect the QB.

wow, I missed that watching the game live but the network didn't give that much of a big replay at first so I switched the channel...... or I was just too drunk.........

But did anyone else think they coulda called the Tom Brady Tuck rule on this also or is it just me?

Really. Look, refs are humans and make mistakes, so I'm not as up in arms as some. How about you just admit it. Say "damn, we hecked up. Was watching the ball to see if it would come out, the facemask happened fast and I didn't catch it."

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

The ball never hit the ground. It was a INT.

I think it would be a great idea for the NFL to look at this rule. Cause that play on Sunday there should of definitely been a flag
