NFL Passes Modified Overtime Proposal For Playoffs

The NFL has adopted the modified overtime proposal recommended by the competition committee that will only apply to the postseason. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that the rule passed by a 28-4 margin with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals voting against the proposal. The proposal allows a team that wins the coin toss to be able to win the game with a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, while a field goal would allow the other team to get one possession to tie the game or win it with a touchdown, and if the outcome is not decided on the first possession by each team then a sudden-death format would follow.

I'm starting to come around on this one. I just wish it wasn't only going to be used in the postseason. Should have been an overall change.

Me too... I mean whatever, as long as it's even who cares. Still think there were better options though... Edit - Actually this reads different than I remember... this is kind of what I wanted anyway. Sweet.

They are only doing it in the post season to conserve time in the regular season and so we don't start having more tie games (aka - one of the gayest things in sports), but I still want it in regular season too, of course.

Yep. Time to let the old tired conspiracy theory die.

How long before they revise this because both teams are kicking field goals...I say they should have kept it the way it was. Why not just say the first team to score a TD wins and a field goal isn't allowed in OT>

I hope there isn't an OT playoff game for like 10 years now.

Now watch the Vikings lose Superbowl XLV after kicking a field goal in OT, then the other team scoring a TD. New rules are just another way for the Vikes to underachieve :D
