49ers Won't Rule Out Drafting A Quarterback In The First Round

Discussion in 'San Francisco 49ers' started by BigBlueBruiser, Apr 15, 2010.

  1. Matt Maiocco of The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports via twitter that 49ers director of player personnel Trent Baalke won't rule out drafting a quarterback in the first round in the 2010 NFL Draft. However, Maiocco writes that Baalke says he has total confidence in Alex Smith and won't rule out (or rule in) anything for the 49ers during the NFL Draft.

He can't have TOTAL confidence in Smith if he would take a QB in the first round.

I think it would be wise if Clausen or McCoy is there to take a serious look at picking either of them up. I think we can find good talent for oline in the second round, and a returner or pass rusher in the 3rd.

You'd (49ers you, not literally YOU) be stupid to take McCoy in the first, but if he's around at..whats your second? Forty something? He'd be ok then. I'd take Clausen in a second tho if he's there at either first.

I've read a couple reports that McCoy is projected to be a better pro as far as upside than either of Bradford or Clausen, and if we draft a qb, we're not drafting him to start right now. Personally I don't think we should draft a qb and just stick to filling the more pressing needs we have.

Yeah, the fanbase is still happy about trading Shaun Hill (beats me why), and now we're taking McCoy in the second, Ax? That's not happening.

As for drafting a QB in the first. Please no. We can come out of the draft with 2 really good players who can start right away; I don't want to take another guy who's gonna sit his butt one year (because I'm hoping that's Alex's remaining time with the niners) and then take over and prove he's a fluke.

Heard next year's gonna be a strong QB clbutt. I'd rather they way until then to take one.

    Upside of 2010 Quarterbacks.

If everything goes right for them (absolute upside), their talent level and skillset:

Jimmy Clausen = Kurt Warner/Drew Brees
    Sam Bradford = Matt Hasselbeck
Colt McCoy = Kyle Orton/Chad Pennington

    Tim Tebow = Chris Cooley

(John Skelton = John Elway - Just wanted to add that in :icon_cheesygrin:)
