I'm curious to see how this draft would grade out and what people may think of it. I've had a couple of days to let it sink in. Here are picks 1 through 7 and a quick scouting report from NFL.com. Give me your grade, give me your thoughts. 1. (5th overall). Eric Berry, FS Tennessee 2a. (36th overall). Dexter McCluster, WR Mississippi 2b. (50th overall). Javier Arenas, CB/KR Alabama 3a. (68th overall). Jon Asamoah, OG Illinois 3b. (93rd overall). Tony Moeaki, TE Iowa 5a. (136th overall). Kendrick Lewis, FS Mississippi 5b. (142nd overall). Cameron Sheffield, OLB Troy
I am going to get killed for this but I say C-. Berry saves this from a D. The Chiefs had three major issues. Protecting the QB, stopping the run, and getting the QB. They really only "solved" the first of the three. It seems the FO is putting too much faith in Shaun Smith. McCluster is a luxery pick, or someone who is nice to have when there are no real glaring needs. The Chiefs needed ILBs to help stop the run, a real true nose, like Cody who would have helped Dorsey and Jackson. The got a wildcard pass rusher in round 5, meaning will he even make the team. Lewis was projected to be drafted 7th or UDFA. They passed on Okung for Berry, which is tough but understandable. The Chiefs looked like they were starting out with a good draft but some real head scratching picks.
well i think we did pretty good would have liked anouther o-line early in draft but i like the berry pick he will help the d line by not letty the other teams qb have easy open targets, McCluster at first i wasnt to happy about was at work seen pick on my phone he was listed as RB after watching draft on tape and looking him up i see it was good pick he will help cassell and our return game. the rest you never know and just becuase you take a player late in a round they still might be good, just look at brady 6th round, priest holmes and jamal lewis undrafted, and jared allen 4th round of supplemental draft. Gems do fall through the cracks
I give us a C also....loved the pick of Eric Berry (who didn't?) I was in Tulsa at a friends for the draft...and he's a Charger fan...so we drank a toast to the Berry pick...and he was happy with the Ryan Matthews pick. :icon_cool: Anyway...the McCluster pick really confused me at first, but now that it's showing him as a WR, it makes more sense...but I know there were better WR's on the board if that's what they were after... The Lewis pick....why? And why did we draft an injury-prone TE? We already have enough injury prone players on this team. :icon_twisted:
I was initially very disappointed after the Berry pick based on what I considered the biggest needs for the Chiefs. They had the worst overall defense in the NFL last year and I really think we need a true NT and some improvement at the inside linebacker position. We didn't get any of that. Now, when I look at the players we picked up, it really is a solid draft, just not the places I thought we needed them. No need to say much about Berry, he'll instantly make the defense better. McCluster gives us another playmaker on offense. Can you imagine McCluster, Charles, Bowe, and Chambers on the field at the same time. If McCluster can get off the line in NFL press coverage this is an amazing pick. Javier Arenas was widely regarded as the best kick returner in the draft which was a huge need for us. Arenas also has a unique skillset to play the slot corner and he's great at blitzing. Those 3 players will contribute day 1. Asamoah has the chance to start for this team and will be primary backup interior lineman if he doesn't. Fills a need and will contribute next year. Moeaki if healthy is better than both Pope and Cottam and should be the starter and contribute next year. Perkins and Sheffield shouldn't have a problem making the team and I expect them to contribute on special teams. I was initially thinking a C based on what I thought the Chiefs needed. The bottom line is the Chiefs left with 7 players that shouldn't have a problem making the 53 man roster. Five of them should be regular contributors, 3 of them should be impact players. Let's be honest, the Chiefs needed help about everywhere and we got some good football players. I'm giving them a B.
we all see players we want that are supposed to be great but that doesnt always pan out there are lots of player drafted late who turn out great others (ryan leaf) who just flop so for now we just hope for the best, needs were filled and thats why i went with grade B
As good as McCluster could be, the Chiefs' thinking should be defensive players that fit a 3-4 front seven. They got one. They needed at least three or four including a NT and upgrades at three of the four LB positions.
I'm guessing they decided this couldn't all be fixed this year. They really shored up the offensive side of the ball and took care of the secondary. I would guess the focus next year will be on the front 7.
they had charles brown available to shape up that offensive line and cody for the defensive line, they picked neither. Could of been a better draft.
With the 11 rookies we signed that went undrafted...now I feel better...They signed 4 O-linemen, 3 LB's, 2 WR's, 1 RB and a TE....I think that covers every need pretty much, based on if they make the team or not. Chiefs sign 11 rookie free agents | Red Zone
I'm gonna say a D, I wasn't a fan. Eric Berry is the best player in the draft, but I don't know how you can take a safety without fixing the pass-rush, an inconsistent offensive line and a terrible (yes, terrible) quarterback. Had they opted for Okung at 5 and Clausen in 2 I would have given them an A+. I don't understand how a team with a lot of needs in important positions can justify drafting a backup running back and a nickel corner/kick returner in round 2 with guys like Sergio Kindle and Koa Misi available. If you had to go offense, Jared Veldheer or Charles Brown? I like Asomoah and Moeaki, I think both are top prospects at their respective positions, but i value Guard and Tight End very low on the positional value chart. Kendrick Lewis will be a good player, but they could have waited a round and obtained him at the top of the sixth, picking up a guy like Ricky Sapp who slid to the 5th. I'm not Chief-hating before you say it. I think the fans are great, and I'd love to see them be competitive again. You guys didn't deserve this. You deserve much better. :icon_cool:
^First part seems pretty bias, most Chiefs fans, at least, like Cassel and our O-line did a heck of a lot better in the 2nd half of the season, though it still could be better. Not to mention, we picked up a few FA O-line. McCluster being a backup RB isn't quite right. He's gonna be our slot receiver, and basic trick play weapon. Just the fact that we're gonna use him in the slot was enough for me to justify the pick. I'm with you on the nickelback, but if he can be something more than that, like beat out Carr at CB, then that's more than worth the pick. I think Cassel has a serious weapon with McCluster, and with him and Charles on the same field, it won't be too pretty for opposing defenses. And no don't bash on his size, Desean Jackson isn't much bigger or taller and last time I checked, he was doing fine. As for my grade, I went C. I wish we had gotten an ILB and maybe a NT, but our defense should still be a bit better with Berry.
When was the last time a FS was able to stop teams from running down their throats? A slot receiver is a great luxery, but could be found later on. CB was the strongest part for the Chiefs last season despite not having a pass rush. I don't get Pioli. If I didn't love Berry as a prospect and had him as the best player in the draft I would have graded the Chiefs as a D.
Trust me, I'm with you, that's exactly WHY I graded it a C. I REALLY wanted a guy who could stop the run, and no I don't think Berry is gonna be a run-stopper. We got him for coverage and that's that. I just respect the fact that Pioli was looking for playmakers, since he had literally none other than Charles last year. If we didn't draft Arenas, and had gotten an ILB in that spot, I'd have graded much higher.
As a Raiders fan, I give it an A.:icon_cheesygrin: Objectively though, it's a C/D. Not that any of the picks are terrible players or anything, but on a team with so many glaring needs they really didn't address any of them for the most part. I don't see any of these guys improving the team enough overall to really affect their W/L column.
