NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sat down with NFL Network NFL Total Access host Rich Eisen on Wednesday to discuss some issues facing the league, including whether the new overtime rules adopted for postseason will also be incorporated into the regular season in 2010. Goodell expects the new format will be discussed among owners, coaches and the NFL's business partners in advance of the league meeting in May. "We will present it to our membership, and we will evaluate it and possibly vote on it," said Goodell. "I think the change that was made at the March meeting was great for the fans. I think this is a great thing because it protects us from an outcome that people (would) feel cheated." Source: USA Today
My vote is if there is going to be a change with one they should do it for both. Use the same rule in the regular season.
The current method of deciding the game by a coin toss is weak. This proposal at least tries to bring some balance without screwing up Sunday's schedule too much.
It's only been since 1994 that the team that won the coin toss has had an advantage and that's because they moved the kickoff back 5 yards. If they want it balanced again, move the kickoff back up 5 yards. From 1974 to 1994 there's plenty of balance. lol...just b/c a team wins the toin coss doesn't necessarily mean they win the game on their first possession...
The fact that they have seperate rules for the playoffs and NOT the regular season is assbackwards. There's going to be a crapload of strategy that's going to go into deciding what to do and when to do it and you're not going to give coaches the opportunity to practice and prepare for this? Cold turkey into the playoffs? It's one of the dumber things the NFL has ever done...
Giving each team the ball inside the 20 yard line and giving them a chance to score, until one of them fails to score and the other team does? Sounds pretty legit to me.
lol...how's that legit? That's not remotely close to football... You're willing to eliminate 1/3 of the game and remove 80% of the playing field? It's silly...it's a gimmick. The NBA should play H-O-R-S-E to decide overtime...that'd be exciting.
College rules are the WORST, old NFL way is second worst, I support the new rules. My only complaint was only ever that it was only applied to the playoffs. I hope they vote it in for the full season!
Why not just have a whole extra 15 minutes? And that would increase the time enough that the NFL could make more ad dollars. 5 yards makes that much of a difference? Even going back 5 yards is still unfair to the toss loser.
