Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable confirmed Wednesday what many suspected all along: The beleaguered franchise finally cut quarterback JaMarcus Russell because the former top draft pick's obvious lack of fire was a poor fit for a team struggling to move forward with a new attitude and fresh approach. "We did what's best for our football team. That's all that really matters here. Why or why not or this or that doesn't really matter anymore. What matters is that we move forward as a football team and that we do what we need to do to succeed," Cable said in an interview with KNBR radio in San Francisco, discussing why the Raiders finally made the decision on May 6 to part ways with an underachieving, overpaid player whose poor work ethic actually turned teammates against him on the field during Russell's 12 appearances and nine starts in 2009. "I think this: I think that we have spent a lot of time in the last year and a half trying to turn this thing into a competitive team and we've done that," Cable said. "I think that guys in that locker room expect from myself and this organization -- no B.S. "Let's go out and work hard and become champions and get ourselves into the playoffs. That's our goal now. That's it. They've accepted it [Russell's release] fine. We really haven't put a lot into it or talked a lot about it. It's not necessary."
