49ers Won't Give TE Vernon Davis $8M Per Year?

The 49ers have a number of players in line for possible contract extensions and tight end Vernon Davis appears to be the top candidate. NFL sources say Davis is seeking to become the highest-paid tight end in the league at $8 million per season but it's doubtful the 49ers will go that high. With no collective bargaining agreement in place, it's a delicate situation for teams to sign players to long-term deals. If the sides reach no contract agreement, the 49ers could place the franchise tag to keep him around in 2011. But with no new CBA, we don't even know if teams will have that option in the future.

i don't blame them. $8 mill for a tight end is ludicrous.

Well he did tie the record for TEs for TDs and is one of the best blockers in the league....but ya as soon as they signed him as a rookie he was the highest paid tight end.

One good year and he thinks he should be the highest paid tightend? Really?

Dude still drops way too many passes to be considered elite at his position.

he was the highest paid TE when he was a rookie and sucked

the more consistency they get from the Qb and other receivers the more unreal davis will be. he is one of the best TEs in the league and in a year or two it will be the best by a wide margin

Thats a big misconception. Coming out of college everyone was worried about his blocking and turned out to be one of the best. Problem was SF offense was AWFUL except the run game. He used almost always blocking. Once an OC came in that used TEs a lot (raye) everyone saw his true potential.

not a misconception by me, he was pretty terrible as a receiver (which is why TEs get drafted 6th overall) you can take any crapty tackle and make him a blocking TE.

i know hes a dominate blocker but the other aspects of his game are whats gonna make him the best....the sheer power and raw speed he has as a receiver is terrifying.

having martz command the offense for a while sure didnt help him but now hes being used right

Being the highest paid TE out of college doesn't mean he should be the highest paid TE now. Up until last season he was considered a bust, one good, not even great, season should not justify him being the highest paid TE again. Another GREAT or above average season at TE and it would be justifiable for him to be the highest paid TE due to his age. It would show that he could consistently be one of the best at his position for years to come.

He sucked at receiving out of college and didn't deserve that contract. Blocking TEs don't get paid that much and are much easier to find so justifying it what that just doesn't work. He's solidified himself as a great blocking TE, if he can dominate at receiving this year, everyone will easily name him as a top three if not the best TE in the league.
