A day after Diner Gate, Rex Ryan made a bold suggestion to help solve the contract impasse with Darrelle Revis. The Jets coach called the notion that the team had lied about whether Woody Johnson was invited to a meeting last Friday at a diner in Roscoe, N.Y., with Revis' agents "a blatant joke." Ryan offered to call off practice and have the entire organization present in a pow-wow with Revis and his agents to end what has become an ugly public back-and-forth. "This is what I would like to have happen -- for everybody to put their cards on the table," Ryan said after this morning's practice. "Have Darrelle come here with anybody he wanted. We’ll have Mr. Johnson here. In fact, this is the way I would handle it: We’ll call off practice. We’ll have our whole team there and meet. That way there’s no he said-she said. Just get the thing done. And let’s work it that way." Ryan didn't stop there. "Let’s do this," the coach continued. "I’m inviting them to come in - Darrelle to come in with everybody else. Anybody he wants. We’ll have the whole team there, including the owner. The entire organization. … And then that’s maybe how we’ll get a solution. Everybody wants a solution. Well, let’s figure a way to do it. Maybe this is a way." Revis' camp invited more communication with the team. "If the Jets want to have a meeting," Schwartz told the Daily News, "the Jets know how to reach us." Source: Manish Mehta, NY Daily News
It isn't quite so stupid as it sounds. Making a big ego to feel small might deflate his insane overestimation of his value.
Rex is definitely cut from daddy's cloth but I'd have to say I'm old school (also used to the Ryan approach with Buddy) & IMO, getting all the 'players' in this comedy/drama together in 1 room isn't such a bad idea at all....tho it'll never happen. Anything to help bring Revis back down to Earth from his self propelled orbit.
Basically he's saying 'I dare you to look your team mates in the eyes and say you want $160M' - kinda underhanded to leverage him with that.
The man should be free to get what he can get for what he can do with out having to justify it to guys who can't get it - heck why don't they hold the pow-wow at a homeless shelter in Hell's Kitchen too for God's sake.
While I agree with the concept, what Revis is asking for would, in most any other business, call for a drug test. If he really wants to try to force an organization to hamstring themselves with a money draining contract, leaving crumbs for any other position, he should answer to his teammates on his rationale IMO. It's beyond selfish, insane, ridiculous...
60 million I think guaranteed. Anyway Revis has shown he is a self server, so it wouldn't shock me if he said no to this idea by Rex.
Years? Neither would I. Of course it would set a bad precedent if this was turned into the norm but in Revis's case, the outrageous sum makes it unique.
It's not like that Jets haven't been doing all they can to paint him as a greedy bastard too (this is case in point), why shouldn't a player get what he can while he can particularly if there's an uncapped year coming up? After the way the Jets washed their hands of Leon Washington after he was injured (and right before he was due a payday) how can you fault Revis for wanting to protect his business interest (his body) when he could get 'Leon Washingtoned' on any single play. Seriously though - all this crap is typical of the Jets.
C'mon, Flacco... 'Within reason' with maybe a good bump or 'extra scoop to the cone' mentality...not a precedent setting, bank breaking demand. Cutthroat business dealings, yea, but hardly a good reason for the following... lol Do you realize what Revis is asking for? Really...what he's truly asking for? This is a simple case of apples & oranges: I agree the Washington situation sucked but it's got no bearing on a guy asking for $ astronomically beyond any previous (successful) league demand. So...just cuz of the potential of injury, the Jets should ensure Revis of money he wouldn't be available to earn or, if he was able, well, well, well beyond the standard for a CB??? I'm sorry, Flacco, no offense, but I think that's insane...
WIthout trying to get to far into your Revis argument here, I think Ryan is a jackass for more reasons than this, but a contract meeting involving an entire team is especially ridiculous and out of line on his part.
So you think it's fine to mug off your team in a selfish act of greed? Please. There are 52 other guys that he'll be hurting with his actions, not to mention the millions of fans he's paid to entertain, because after all, it's an entertainment business.
You're obviously pretty passionate about this issue. I'm not. But until rookies stop getting maximum guaranteed money, you're going to have the top players at each position wanting more guaranteed, because contracts in the NFL are written in crap and can be terminated at the club's discretion. This really is not a two-way street, so I'm not going to hate on Revis for doing what he thinks he should. Would I leave the team and hold out for more money? Probably not, but I'm not going to pretend to know about the business side of football, the NFL is about making money ahead of anything else.
