Buccaneers WR Mike Williams Looking To Be Rookie Of The Year

Nobody would blame Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver Mike Williams for breathing a sigh of relief after seeing his team's first preseason depth chart. Williams is listed as Tampa Bay's starting receiver heading into this weekend's preseason game at Miami. He will play the "X" receiver, who usually lines up on the opposite side of the tight end and stands at the line of scrimmage. Last season, Tampa Bay's "X" receiver was Antonio Bryant, that player typically draws one-on-one coverage and is expected to make big plays, like New England's Randy Moss, San Diego's Vincent Jackson and Miami's Brandon Marshall. While that is a huge accomplishment for Williams, a fourth round draft pick out of Syracuse, he is not content. "I'm not satisfied. Even if I was to go out there and be No. 1 on opening day, that's not my goal," Williams said. "My goal is to be rookie of the year and help this team. I'll be satisfied after that and proving all those people wrong about me off the field. "I'm not satisfied with that [depth chart]. That's just a step toward the right direction."

hes going to be so good....steal of the draft and i said that months before he was drafted, im kind of surprised they took him in the 4th, its gonna end up being a good move

Said the same thing myself in JJ's draft thread sometime back, if Williams gets his head on straight. And it appears that he has.

They are going to have a nasty WR set soon. Been may take a year or so to arrive, but him and Williams are both capable of being #1 WR's

Now they need to get a real QB.

Exactly. He needs a good QB to throw him the ball to put up good numbers. Who was the last WR to put up great numbers with no QB other then Calvin Johnson?

Freeman did ok considering he was a rookie last year.

so freeman is a nobody after a not bad year that was pretty much on par with stafford and sanchez? please.

their biggest weaknesses were interior dline and weapons at WR...well mccoy and price=interior dline and benn and williams=weapons

benn is so physical, so fast, so strong and a hard runner....wouldnt be surprised to see him used in a reggie bush role, hes that type of athlete. If he went to ND like he was planning he would have been a high first round pick. and mike williams is very polished as a WR, easily a first round talent and would have been right there with dez and bay bay in the first round if he wasnt such a disaster at syracuse

59.9 QB rating with 10 TD and 18 INT? Sounds pretty crappy to me.

They are going to have a very weak running game. Very little pass rush unless McCoy makes everyone around him that much better. Ruud at linebacker but noone around him. Average secondary with Talib. Have a hard time believing that Freeman can put together a good passing game with that weak a team around him.

Dude, he had an average line most of the time, he had no weapons to throw to on a consistant basis, he was a ROOKIE, and he had a change of offensive coordinators right before the season started.:icon_rolleyes:

so why blast the QB play when its clear they suck all around? price has gone into beast mode and mccoy has been explosive.

mark sanchez had a crapty TD/int ratio too. he was a rookie for christ sake being thrown into one of the worst possible situations for a rookie, at least sanchez had a defense and run game

they had a great draft and imo are on the way up

I never said Sanchez or Stafford were real QBs...

His offensive line is the same this year as last year.

I disagree. They are still the worst team in that division. They are better then last year but they aren't there.

If that team can get a running game (Ward and Graham and Williams is not it), a better offensive line, a pass rush on defense then maybe this team can start to win some games, but there is zero chance that Freeman is a good enough QB to put up good numbers with a bad running game and bad defense.

rookies dont come into bad teams and light the world on fire. stafford will be the best of the group but freeman did some good things last year

i said on their way up, not on top of the world....that division is all over the place every year, they could easily contend within a year or 2

Matt Ryan, Adrian Peterson, and Chris Johnson disagree. Right now...Stafford, Sanchez, and Freeman look like they'll be backups in 3 years.

Dude, a running back is different than a QB. But let's get this back on topic.

matt ryan was not on a terrible team, they were picking 3rd but that had alot to do with their coaching fiasco. their roster right now is not that much different than it was back then

lol RB is the easiest position to play, i meant QBs. rookie QBs do well when they are along for the ride, roethlisberger, flacco, sanchez. i wouldnt be surprised at all if stafford threw for 3500+ yards and 25+ TDs this year

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

mike williams and benn will probably have 2 of the best rookie years among WRs because they are likely both gonna be starters and thrown into action. i expect them to do well and get some chemistry with freeman since they are all very young players

He said rookies...not QBs...and I never said they needed to light the world on fire. I also didn't say Sanchez and Stafford are going to be great or even good. It was also on topic since I was talking about Freeman being horrible and it won't help Williams and he was the one who brought up other QBs that suck to prove that Freeman doesn't suck.

Matt Ryan was a rookie QB that went into a horrible team, didn't light the world on fire, but still took the reigns and steered that team to the right direction. And I forgot to mention Flacco too. As of now, Stafford, Sanchez, and Freeman all looked horrible with their decision making, in my opinion.

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

Matt Ryan was on a terrible team, the Falcons just did well in that draft and free agency. It wasn't just the coaching, it was the whole team being horrible at scouting and drafting, etc. I wouldn't say Ryan helped bring that team back to relevance alone, but he did what he was suppose to do and took command, which is great for a rookie. Neither Freeman, Sanchez, nor Stafford has done that. 3500+ yards and 25+ TDs? I don't see that happening.
