Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell was caught off guard by the team’s decision to bench him in favor of Bruce Gradkowski Sunday afternoon. The big offseason acquisition was 8-of-15 passing for 87 yards and an interception in the first half against the St. Louis Rams. “I was surprised,†Campbell said following the game, per Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune. “We were down 7-3. We had been moving the ball. We just stalled when we got to the red zone. But at the same time, it was a decision that they made. I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do and just live with it and just move forward.†Raiders fans began chanting for Gradkowski as the former Washington Redskins captain tried in vain to put points on the board while in Rams territory. It may have been Campbell’s interception late in the first half that ultimately sealed his fate for the day. Whether his fate for the day turns into his fate for the season remains to be seen as head coach Tom Cable stated that he has not made up his mind about the starter for next week. Why can Gradkowski improve the team wherever he goes, and just get consistent disrespect? I don't know why they thought Campbell was an upgrade.
Gradkowski is like a Jeff Garcia reincarnation, stats aren't pretty, but he's tough and gritty and guys rally around him. This is a playoff team with him in, I used to believe in Campbell as an NFL QB, but he's just WAY too inconsistent to be a starter anymore. Oakland needs to make the move and make Gradkowski their guy, trade Campbell if you need to, but make Gradkowski the guy if Campbell struggles next week
ive been saying this since last pre season, Bruce plays like Jeff Garcia...who also never got enough credit
