49ers Retire Ex-WR Jerry Rice's No. 80 Jersey

  1. Jerry Rice's No. 80 will hang from the upper deck at Candlestick Park alongside all the other San Francisco 49ers greats. Rice's jersey was retired during a halftime ceremony Monday night, when the Niners hosted the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. The Hall of Fame wide receiver -- known for his tireless work ethic even in the late stages of his career -- played the first 16 of his 21 NFL seasons with San Francisco, from 1985-2000. Fans chanted "Jerry! Jerry!" for much of the night. Rice served as an honorary team captain and was formally presented with his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to see Jerry play before he retired. He was and has always been a true professional both on and off the field. To bad more players today don't try to emulate his work ethic and attitude both in and out of football!!! He is by far the greatest receiver to ever hit the gridiron and I miss seeing him in action.

One of the greatest players ever gets to celebrate immortality with the fans who saw him rise to that level.

Glad to see the number finally retired! The way things were going there for awhile it almost seemed like the 49ers would soon run out of numbers! Now they can't find a win!

Just saying... it's one of the few if not the only positions left that was dominated so much by a single player in every way that it can hardly be argued for those that would even try.
