For all you non-NFL Network watching readers, here's a bit of the background story. The NFL Network has been running a series this fall where a panel of "experts" have chosen the top 100 players in NFL history. The final results are in and they chose Jerry Rice as the top player ever:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1mUsyospQM]YouTube - NFL Top 100 Players # 1 - Jerry Rice[/ame]

So do you agree? Here is the list of the top 10 that was revealed Thursday night on NFL Network:

    1. WR Jerry Rice
    2. RB Jim Brown
    3. LB Lawrence Taylor
    4. QB Joe Montana
    5. RB Walter Payton
    6. QB Johnny Unitas
    7. DL Reggie White
    8. QB Peyton Manning
    9. WR Don Hutson
    10. LB twinky Butkus

Who's your top 10? Who's your #1 all time? Who deserved to be in the top 10 and who didn't have any business being there?

  2. It's very nice to see L.T. recognized on that list as the greatest defensive player ever. Having said that, I also agree with Rice being considered as the greatest player in NFL history.

He holds just about every major receiving record.....he is probably the most complete wide receiver to play the game. He could catch just about anything that was thrown to him....no matter who was defending him.

That top 10 list is very hard to argue against....all Hall of Famers and among the best players ever to play at their respective positions.

  3. Here's my 10:

    1. WR Jerry Rice
    2. RB Jim Brown
    3. LB Lawrence Taylor
    4. QB Joe Montana
    5. RB Walter Payton
    6. QB Johnny Unitas
    7. DL Reggie White
    8. QB Peyton Manning
    9. QB John Elway
    10. DB Ronnie Lott

Peyton Manning in the top ten is horrible. i dont care about his stats, the guy is still playing and shouldnt even be mentioned with the players in the top ten. Manning top fifty i get it, top ten?...... no freaking way.

I also would switch 1 and 2 for obvious personal reasons. And Peyton Manning IS in my 10.

it's difficult to rank the old-time players that didn't play in our lifetimes. jim brown may have been better than walter payton. i'm not sure. and ranking players is almost impossible because many of them are beneficiaries of a system or the talent around them. but out of the nfl players i have personally watched play during my lifetime, i'm going with ................

    #1 Walter Payton
    #2 Peyton Manning
    #3 Ronnie Lott
    #4 Barry Sanders
    #5 John Elway
    #6 Lawrence Taylor
    #7 Reggie White
    #8 Joe Greene
    #9 Jerry Rice
    #10 Joe Montana

I think Jerry Rice's statistical dominance makes it undisputable.

they also had a roundtable of i believe four of the "experts" and they also went over who they missed who should be higher who lower......the difference between the way football was played in 20s 30s 40s 50s etc etc and how maybe a player from today wouldnt be as dominate in another era and vice versa......dan patrick kinda did the same thing on his show today.

I have to agree with patrick and eisen when they say that P Manning will probably be the greatest in 20 yrs...

Rice is the right choice. In fact, he still does kick butt on the gridiron.

see, i don't agree with this assessment at all.

players today are SO much bigger, faster, and stronger than their counterparts 80 or 90 years ago due to genetics and advanced training/health techniques, a player today would absolutely pwn the league if they went back in time, regardless of what 'type' of ball is being played. Hell, ball players 80 or 90 years ago used to smoke cigarettes on the sidelines. A Modern player would be even MORE dominant as they go back in time and an older era player would be LESS dominant as he would go forward in time.

people don't want to forget the older era players, which i understand because they should not be forgotten, but the argument that 1920 players are anywhere near 2010 players is ludicrous.

There were some good points on Jim Brown on NFL radio this morning. 1. He averaged over 5 yards/carry 2. Everybody in the stadium knew he was getting the ball and he did it anyway.
They basically said that anybody over age 50 will choose Jim Brown and anybody under age 50 will choose Jerry Rice. I'm under 50, so.......
