Eagles Name O-Line Coach Juan Castillo As Defensive Coordinator

Discussion in 'Philadelphia Eagles' started by BigBlueBruiser, Feb 2, 2011.

  1. In a stunning move, the Eagles have named their offensive line coach Juan Castillo to be the team's next defensive coordinator, a league source told The Inquirer. Howard Mudd, considered one of the best offensive line coaches, will replace Castillo as the Eagles' offensive line coach. The team later made the moves official. Castillo has been the Eagles offensive line coach for more than 15 years. He was, however, once a linebackers in the USFL.

The word that he has used for the past 12 years which qualifies him for the job in Andy's eyes.

I honestly thought this was a joke when I first heard it. Never saw this coming.

I don't think ANYBODY did. Maybe this was the basis for the whispers that Andy has had his man in mind for a few weeks? Why the delay?

    Elaborating...

He was the defensive line/linebackers coach at Texas A&M-University Kingsville in the early 1980s and then the defensive coordinator at Kingsville High School in the late 1980s. In between [the 80's], he was a linebacker in the USFL.

Ehhh. I'm not selling him short because his background is offensive coaching....so was Jim Johnson's at one point and it was his defense that won you a SB SoDev so show some respect.

My problems with this is it looks as if the Eagles either A) never really wanted to look and want another company man or B) looked but did it so late and ineptly that they couldn't get anyone outside.

Mudd's addition CERTAINLY makes this a little easier pill to swallow right now but as I gaze into my crystal ball I don't know if I see the Eagles putting together a strong enough D to keep Reid and Castillo from being crucified for this move. If they had time to grow a defense in a couple season maybe but I don't think Philly media will allow that at this point in Reid's tenure.

  11. This was certainly out of left field.....

But the Howard Mudd hire should hopefully bode well for the Eagles' offensive-line.

One of the best O-Line coaches in NFL history.

  12. I think Washburn will have alot more power than people think.

The Mudd move obviously is fantastic.

Why would you hope that Howard Mudd helps the Eagles O-Line? lol...

  14. Mudd is a great O-Line coach.....I would be stupid and naive to think any less.

Because perhaps it took them that long to lock down Mudd.

Not a fan of this. WAY too freaking risky. This is going to be the lone call that determines Reid's fate within the next two years.

I get the fact that he has seen the front 7 from the other side for the past 15 years. That certainly gives him a nice little viewpoint. He knows what can beat the offensive line. That's a solid advantage. Him working with Washburn has the potential to be something special.

That said... what can he honestly know about coaching a secondary? Coverage schemes? It's VERY worrisome.

You better throw enormous stacks of money at a guy like Champ or Nnamdi if you make a move like this. And go find a damn good secondary coach.

Oh, believe me, I LOVED winning the SB with the Eagles defense.

Speaking of... today is the 3 year anniversary of winning the SB with the Eagles defense! :jiggy:

So the Cowboys bring in Rob Ryan, and we get Juan Castillo.

    Cool cool.
