The Detroit Lions have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent safety Erik Coleman, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports. A fifth-round pick (143rd overall) out of Washington State by the New York Jets in 2004, Coleman has recorded 604 tackles, 2 quarterback sacks, and 10 interceptions during his seven-year career. Coleman (5-10, 200) spent the past three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, starting all 32 games between the 2008 and 2009 seasons before appearing in 12 games in a reserve role in 2010. Coleman was due to earn a $3 million base salary in 2011, which likely prompted the Falcons to release him last Wednesday. Source: macsfootballblog
I agreed with the Lions blowing up their team after their 0-16 season. They have been very aggressive bringing in veteran players since that time. however, at a certain point, they need to be relying more on their draft picks and ufa's to build a new foundation. just plugging holes from year to year isn't going to turn this franchise around.
Honestly they have been playing there rookies/draft picks. We have a pretty young team, minus Backus & Raolia on our offensive line. KVB and Peterson last year were our old guys on D. Pretty much our whole team has been young guys, or our draft picks so they have been doing what you have been saying. Last year I believe we would of won more then 6 games if Stafford wouldn't of been a china glass doll. I think Coleman will be in the running for the other starting saftey position opposite of Louis Delmas. Team needs help bad on the secondary and the LB's we need two Outside linebackers.
um, you're leaving out a lot of the castoffs from other teams that the Lions have brought in over the past couple of years that were still playing a lot this year.......... Burleson, BJ, Scheffler, Vasher, Houston, McBride, C.C., Jackson ............... I could go on and on ........... the Lions are full of guys that underachieved elsewhere and had so many question marks surrounding them, that the only place they could go in the league and still start was the Lions .............. I understand why the Lions felt the need to blow up that 0-16 team and bring in 'new' warm bodies to build a new roster, but, at this point, in my opinion, they are still playing way too many guys that would be 2nd (or 3rd) stringers on most other rosters. It's time to start weening off of these mediocre underachievers that they brought in to rebuild their roster. They'll have another year of draft picks and UFA's to work with this off-season, so they should have even more capability to start moving some of these guys off the field.
No but a veteran presence could be invaluable for someone like Delmas. Learning to be a pro sometimes needs to be passed down.
eh, delmas already has vets in the secondary to learn from .............. and i'm not sure that is as important as it once was anyway. it seems the SB winner almost every year now is one of the youngest teams in the league. basically all i'm getting at is that the lions need to get more young talent.
They will. I think the Lions are on the right track overall. That secondary needs to be fixed though, it's a major liability.
agreed and agreed..... and i'm not sold on their LB's and o-line either but, overall, they are heading in the right direction.
O-line needs a upgrade too. Backus is on his last leg. It's downhill from there. If I were Schwartz though I'd be bringing in people simply to raise the stakes for competition. Make it a battle of attrition and may the best man end up starting.
