This came up at work, we 're talking football and the subject of the Bills/Oilers 1993 great playoff comeback came up. Now being from the area, the game was blacked out, so guess how I "saw" the game........on the radio. Back before Jihad Joe was Jihad Joe and was still Fatwa Fred, I would say radio would be my media for about 1 in 5 football games Now this may have to do more with the fact I was a kid (12 at the time), but then listening to game on the radio, especially a big game, and especially THAT game was freaking epic. I would say listening to that game on WHAM was one of my Lifetime Top 10, maybe even Top 5 media experience's. You always would prefer to watch the game, but every once in a while (being so young I couldnt stay up for SNF or MNF so I listened in my room) it was a great alternative. You learn to truly appreciated quality announcers in particular Play by Play, and it was a completely different type of tension. its not quite the same now, wheather its the quality of the medium, beiong spoiled over the years by technology, or just the fact that Im much older now. What are some things about the NFL you miss for whatever reason?
of all games....:icon_frown: I remember back in '91 when the Oilers and Redskins played. My brother and I were huddled by our stereo (he's a Redskins fan) listening to a whisper of a radio station that was coming in with the game. The wild end of that game just felt so much bigger even though it was on this crappy signal. I also am a big Howard David fan since he was the voice of Sunday Night Football on the radio back in the day. We didn't have cable when I was a kid so my brother and I finished off our football Sunday's by listening to the game in our room on the radio. There are some announcers who just have a gift of knowing when to talk, what to say and when to shut up and let the crowd tell the story.
The only time i really listen to games on the radio nowadays is when my Idian Rez smoke run runs threw part of the early game. The announcers nowadays seem very hackish, more network rejects then guys that fit radio more. Screw I think Denny Green was a color guy in one of the games lol
Yeah everyone tries to have that bombastic "Don Pardo" voice. TV isn't that much better....how the hell is Joe Buck a No.1 play by play man? Marv Albert was another one who I enjoyed as an announcer as a kid. He did games for the Knicks, Rangers and he just made the games feel like a big deal. I know he's a basketball man first and foremost, but the Marv Albert/Paul McGuire duo was always one of my all time favorite booths.
I've only listened to one football game on the radio in my lifetime......Giants vs. Chargers in 2005 (Eli's first game against the team that originally drafted him.) The T.V. was out in my house and my internet connection was lousy at the time so streaming the game was out of the question. I was desperate.....but I was able to pick up the game after messing around with the antenna. It was decent and at least I wasn't in the dark but it doesn't beat watching a game in HD. We all grow up with things were accustomed to and appreciate.
i only ever listen to a game on the radio if i have to drive through part of it. i really cant stand football on the radio. baseball i dont mind, i guess cause its slower but football on the radio dont work for me
I had a little tiny TV in my room that I was able to pick up WGAL Channel 8 and I would be able to see every Steelers game on my little TV in my bedroom. Then my Dad got a new antenna on the roof that was able to be directed and I eventually was able to watch them on the big TV.
Wow. I was 18 in 93.... But radio back then had an anticipation factor don't get ttthat with tv don't get me wrong tv is great but for those of us that heard radio we got the last of the good announcers .. I used to listen to cowboy games in Louisiana in mid 80s sent from my HTC EVO using tapatalk

Being from the Bay Joe Starkey, Bill King and Greg Papa were/are big voices when I think about football announcers. Back in the pre-cable days, my family lived outside the Bay far enough that the rabbit ears would only barely pick up football games so the radio was often the only option. I remember if you stood on the other side of the living room and kind of squinted, you could sometimes see the ball in flight on pass plays. Love King and Papa but Starkey (WHAT A BONANZA) was always my favorite, an unrepentant Cal homer (announced for the Niners too), and responsible for one of the most famous calls in sports history. Even as a Raiders fan I loved listening to his Niner games when I could. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfebpLfAt8g]Cal Bears Football 82: The Play‏ - YouTube[/ame]
