In three seasons, Vernon Gholston never sacked a quarterback, but he managed to blindside his former coach. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said he's "confused" as to why Gholston, now a backup defensive end with the Chicago Bears, would blame him for his flameout. Gholston, who returned to New Jersey Monday night to face the Giants, told reporters after the game he didn't receive a fair shot from Ryan. "I don't agree with him on that," Ryan said Tuesday. "My job isn't to make one player better or to feature one player. When I came here, my job was to build the best defense we could possibly build and, statistically, it's hard to argue with (the results)." The Jets, who drafted Gholston sixth overall in 2008, gave up on him after three sackless seasons, releasing him in early March. Gholston, a holdover from the Eric Mangini regime, said he was pre-judged by Ryan, which is "sad to say." Ryan didn't dispute that part of Gholston's claim, in his recent book, Ryan says he felt Gholston was a "phony" when he came out of Ohio State, meaning he was overrated. "Obviously, I wasn't as high on him as maybe others were, but when I got here, we were all in," Ryan said. "I wanted Vern to be successful and I'd still like him to be successful."

I fully expected to click this and see Ryan rip this guy a new one. But he didn't. First time ever Rex Ryan has kept his mouth shut?

At first glance I was all for Ryan but seeing that Ryan himself didn't care for the kid maybe some of the resentment rubbed off. Either way, it's up to Vernon to step up and play well. Don't blame your shortcomings on the coach.

Hey Vernon, I think maybe if you played like the Jets top pick from 2007, You'd get more playing time but that's too much to ask apparently.:icon_rolleyes:

Yeah it's Rex Ryan fault that you did nothing for 3 years despite the fact he wasn't there in 2008. Dude your a bust pure and simple

  11. Perhaps part of the reason he is a bust is for stuff like this. He is a little punk who can't take responsibility for things that are his fault.
