NFL Uniform Rules Could Prevent 9/11 Commemoration

At least one Chargers player might risk a fine Sunday by wearing red, white and blue cleats he was sent by Reebok. A handful of Chargers players were given the starred and striped cleats but told by a Reebok representative that the shoes had not been approved to wear in a game. Players expressed confusion over why the NFL would deny them the chance to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by wearing different cleats when the league provides pink apparel (including shoes) to be worn by teams to promote breast cancer awareness each October. League spokesman Greg Aiello said he knew of no plans to allow players to alter their uniforms on Sunday and declined to comment on whether any players would be fined for wearing alternate footwear. The league has strict guidelines about game-day clothing.

I'd take the fine to represent my country and the people who gave their lives. Screw the NFL rules.

Let's be clear....wearing red/white/blue cleats does d**k for the country. If the beurocratic bullcrap keeps it from being approved before the game....and you wear it anyway. You deserved the fine for breaking the uniform policy just as if you came out in a tutu.

It's about showing support for the families. Showing that those people aren't forgotten. Small things like that mean a lot. Wearing pink shoes does nothing for cancer but it's still a good show of support for cancer patients.

Sorry to burst your bubble.....but.....small things like that don't mean crap. Wearing pink RAISES MONEY for breast cancer when the fans but pink crap too...that's why it matters. The red/white/blue cleats means exactly heck all. Ĥ

It's about them being remembered. Not everything is about money. You're clearly not the kind of person to see it that way though. So keep being cynical and pessimistic, seems to be all you do around here.

Players should be allowed to express themselves this weekend. Stop worrying about how the "product" will look on the field this week.

I'm not pessimistic at all. I'm realistic. I have a great life and therefore no need to derive meaning from what color cleats players wear. If that makes me a cynic then so be it. I do however know for a fact that if SRW had his way and the players were free to "express themselves" then the game would be a mess of bullcrap distractions. Now a few red white and blue cleats won't due that any more then they would "mean something" or "remember the families" but I understand the need for the rule. Would an exception in this situation bother me...no, but to act like it matters one way or the other for the country is freaking goobered.

Distraction for you, patriotic to others. I guess freedom of choice or expression is something that others are used to giving away freely.

Drama queen. Re-read my posts and see if you can figure it out a second time because you clearly didn't understand it the first.

phigles, I read your comments. Because I choose to not agree doesn't make one a drama queen. Overreact much?

Me over react? Your the ones turning football players wearing/not wearing free reebok cleats of a different color for one game into a socio political commentary on the nation and civil liberties.

    Of course he does...

What the heck does he care? He didn't lose anyone in 9/11. He doesn't know what "little things" do for people struggling with that nightmare. He's got a good life, nothing ever bad happened to him...some people aren't as fortunate and appreciate the little things.

So this wasn't about NFL players not being able to commemorate those lost ten years ago? Oh, pardon my ignorance.
