Why though? Is there a reason he can't give us WC aspirations? We have A LOT of talent in the talent pool right now. The issue was Bob Bradley was kind of a dumbbutt. He had a lot of talent on the team that he didn't utilize such as Demarcus Beasley. That dude is still a stud and showed it. Word is in November the US is going to be playing 2 matches in Europe, 1 most likely against France so I'm hoping he calls up some of the regulars for that and we see a consistent team play.

The fact that Landon Donovan is the "greatest player of all time", despite failing everywhere outside of the MLS, does more than suggest that the USA will not even sniff a WC Semi-Final any time soon. The fact is, US lost to a lot of crapty teams recently and are making a big deal from being Honduras. That's not progress, that's regression.
Did you not watch his last stint in Everton? I'm pretty sure that he didn't "fail miserably" there. And you disagree that we don't have a ton of talent in our talent pool? We have quite a few young guys who are getting some GREAT experience domestic and abroad. Our coaching staff has a great leader in Klinsmann. The USMNT needs a complete reboot. We LOVE the run n gun and that doesn't work. They need to work on control, making smart passes and playing strategic, methodical soccer. Klinsmann brings all of this. He had great success with Germany and I think that he'll bring big success to the US. Baby steps my friend. Will we win the WC in 2014? Probably not. 2018? Who knows. But in the end it's just helping to make an impact on the national scene that we need at this time. So will Klinsmann help the US to win a World Cup in his reign? Maybe not. But the impact he'll have will be far greater. As it is, look how many German and Mexican American guys are choosing the US over their home nations? We already have 5, who knows how many will join them when all is said and done. Bottom line is he brings excitement to US Soccer and it's an ever growing sport in the states.
Andy that was truly a crapty post. Donovan has been successful everywhere he has been. No one said the US was going to the semifinals. We said we have a chance to be successful under Klinsmann who is a great coach despite what you think. the fact is the US lost to a bunch of crapty teams but they weren't trying to win. They were meaningless games that Klinsmann just wanted to get a look at a few young players. If you think those were the US A teams your insane.
Yep he was so great they didn't take him back. You may have solid talent, but nothing that resembles more than that. Counting MLS as great experience is ridiculous also, just full of past it foreigners and Americans who couldn't cut it in Europe. And who/where are these young guys overseas? I presume somewhere in eastern europe? His resume consists of getting Germany to the semi-finals of a World Cup, but then again, what German coach hasn't been able to make Germany perform in the World Cup (Not to mention Low was the brains of the unit), and he got chased out of Bayern. Don't confuse him for Sir Alex just yet. Only probably not? I consider myself an open minded guy, but there is NO CHANCE of US sniffing a final in the next 20 years, and I probably would have put in semi finals but then again we've seen Turkey, Korea & Uruguay make runs that far before. The fact is, there are so many factors that prevent US from ever being successful, including it being a minority interest to sports fans, a low pool of athletic talent to choose from, knowledge etc. Yeah and none of them had a sniff at those teams no doubt. I hate to be so down on America because they have produced some decent teams that are fun to watch, and seemingly an endless supply of top class keepers, but to believe that the US have a remote chance of winning a World Cup imminently is frankly absurd and wildly unrealistic. England doesn't have a realistic chance of winning anything for the next ten years, yet the level of talent coming through is without a shadow of a doubt superior to anything you guys have. Sorry to be the spoiler.
I wonder about that fact too. The only American I knew is Jermaine Jones, but he grew up at Germany, has dual citizenship, wasn't good enough to survive the cut for the German team and is now playing for the US Amen to that
We have: Timmy Chandler (would have played for Germany without a doubt), Fabian Johnson who plays for Hoffenheim. It's mostly young players. Chandler WILL start for the US in the WC. Danny Williams is another good prospect. John Anthony Brooks young Americans coming up through the Bundesliga: Timmy Chandler, Danny Williams, Fabian Johnson, Joe Gyau, Charles Renken, Fabian Hurzeler, Alfredo Morales, John Anthony Brooks.
BM didn't give him enough time. He is a good manager and I would be interested to know who you guys think the US could have gotten that is better?
Tim Howard-One of the top keepers in the WORLD. Plays for Everton in the Premiership. Clint Dempsey-Fulham FC. Was in the top 20 in goal scorers last season with 13 goals. 2 goals in 8 games this season. Scored 2 goals in their Europa League season opener in a 3-0 win. Named player of the year by Fulham fans. Brad Friedel-Starts in goal for Tottenham Hotspurs. Eric Lihaj-Injured at the moment but has been a solid STARTER in the premiership. (Aston Villa) Stuart Holden-Plays for Bolton Wanderers. Generally in their starting 11 but has been injured. Maurice Edu-In the starting 11 for Rangers since 2008. He's had some issues with management but when he's in he's been a stud in the midfield. Carlos Bocanegra- Playing overseas since 03. Has been a starter in the Premiership, Ligue 1 and most recently transferred to Rangers FC. Michael Bradley-Has played and excelled in the Nederlands, Germany and most recently Italy. Had a short stint in England but butted heads with his manager. Jermaine Jones-Been a great player when he's healthy and played his entire career in Germany minus a brief stint in England. Timmy Chandler-Great, young player in Germany. Fabian Johnson-Chose to play for the US over his native Germany. Is a pretty solid defender. Again, is injured right now. Edson Buddle-A bit older but has scored goals everywhere he's played including in Germany at the moment. Jozy Altidore-Exceptional YOUNG player having great success in the Nederlands with AZ. Had some issues but is only 21 and has found his form again. Oguchi Onyewu-Always a big, strong defender that after getting injured came back quickly and couldn't find his form. At the moment is one of the top defenders in Portugal. Sacha Kljestan-Plays in Belgium at the moment and been a key member of the starting 11 for Anderlecht. Not to mention Jose Torres(Pachucha/Mexico), Hercules Gomez(Estudiante Teco/Mexico),Demarcus Beasley(Puebla/Mexico plus years with Rangers) And then I know that you consider MLS a crap league, Brek Shea, George John, Juan Agedelo, Teal Bunbury, Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando. They have some great players in the MLS and some great developing guys. Jurgen has control of that and I think it'll pay great dividends. And as for Landon, Everton wanted him back but the MLS said no. Landon WANTED to return to England but Don Gerber who may be the DUMBEST mother hecker in the world said he'd help soccer in the US waaaaaay too much. And of 18 players that played in the last USMNT match, only 5 currently play in the MLS. 12 play overseas and that wasn't even a full call up. No Fabian Johnson, no Jermaine Jones, no Landon, etc. Will we win in 2018? Most likely not either but a top 4 result in the next 10-20 years. I think it's possible. We proved what the US can do in the Confederations Cup in 09. We essentially won that but gave up in the 2nd half against Brazil. The US is taken seriously and with Klinsmann and some time will become a power in international football. We have the talent pool, we just need to develop it. That's where Jurgen comes into play. He will develop our YOUNG talent which is something Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley essentially ignored and let the US dumbasses run the academy.
I will agree that CONCACAF is a big piece of crap. And sure, you can say Hercules and Jose Torres chose the US because you rejected them, but that's not the conversation here. It's that we have talent on our roster. Again about the argument isn't about us winning. That will be VERY hard especially being in CONCACAF. But rather that Klinsmann will help develop US soccer. If nothing else, he'll at least help develop our academy and such. I think someday we will win a World Cup. Most "professionals" also share that opinion that at some point we will figure it all out, we will develop and find the right talent and win. Of course, I doubt it'll be in my lifetime unfortunately but at some point it'll happen. But honestly, even making it to the semi's would be enough for me.
Johnson made the Junior teams and spent most of his time in the 2nd league. He never played a game in our national team and wasn't nominated for the WC squad. Chandler - maybe, but since he is playing for the US, I guess he didn't saw a fair chance to get into the german team. Same for Jones. He was pissed, Löw cut him, so he choosed to play for the USA.
I'm completely astounded by the comments in this thread. Whether it being the idea that America has players coming through at the moment are on the verge of being elite, or the fact that they could win a World Cup imminently is laughable. The only slightly legitimate claim America has to a remotely elite outfield player in soccer (Be unfair not to call Brad Friedel an outstanding goalie) is Giuseppe Rossi, and he turned his back on them no sweat, as would any other talented player with a link to a top european nation because the US is not going to come close to being an elite team within the decade. The fact is, America generally still thinks the sport is a joke, despite hosting a World Cup, promoting American "superstars" and bringing over burnt out big names. There are massive nations that worship the game that haven't won the world cup, why would a nation who has far more priority sports who don't give two craps about it ever get anywhere?
I don't remember saying that us winning the World Cup is imminent or that we're on the verge of being elite. If that's how you interpret this, my apologies. Yes, Rossi chose World Cup Champion Italy over the US and look where it got him in the 2010 World Cup. So, bully for that! My point is and has always been that Klinsmann is helping the US SOCCER PROGRAM make strides at becoming a team that has promise in international soccer. We're sending players abroad to develop their skills and while Henry, Becks and other guys are "over the hill" in the Premiership, they're still playing highly competitive soccer in the states. As I pointed out we beat some of the top teams in the world during the Confederations Cup in 2009 with far LESS talent than what we have available now. The fact is that other countries do see us as a threat and not just a roll over anymore. We're making STRIDES!! Klinsmann biggest thing is developing soccer at a youth level. Will Soccer ever be the most WATCHED sport in the US? No. Screw, A bunch of guys driving in a circle for 5 hours it the most watched sport in the US, what does that tell you? But let's be honest. Soccer is probably the most PLAYED sport in the US and just because the national media doesn't worship it like foreign countries doesn't mean it's not big. Go to a Portland Timbers game and tell me that soccer can't become huge in the states. The Seattle Sounders had 60,000+ people in attendance for a match the other night (which I hate to admit because I'm a HUGE Timbers supporter and hate the Sounders). It's getting bigger in the states but will it ever be THE sport? No. But again my point in this whole thread is that the US has the talent. I don't care that players who can't play for a RIDICULOUSLY DEEP TALENT POOL in another nation chose the US over their nation. These guys could have easily said heck it and just played club soccer but want to represent a nation. I know the international fan base will NEVER look at the US as a threat with a chance to EVER win the World Cup but I guarantee we will at some point. Again, it may not happen during MY lifetime but it WILL happen. We have too many talented athletes in the United States to not be able to develop into world class athletes. And that's something that Klinsmann is already changing. Many nations U-17, U-20, U-Other Ages teams play games often like their senior teams. The U.S. historically hasn't done that. And we haven't called players into camps unless a big tournament was happening. Now we are. Once we develop an international soccer program, we'll get better. But again, no one ever said we'd win the world cup in the next 20 years but again, even a semi final birth for a nation that's always been a joke would be HUGE for us and I think it's possible.
