Former Browns head coach Eric Mangini turned down a consultant role with the Eagles according to ESPN. Mangini, now employed by ESPN, was a successful defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick with the Patriots before he became head coach of the Jets and last served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles denied on Tuesday that they were looking for defensive consultants to be a sounding board for first-year coordinator Juan Castillo. Castillo's defense ranks 27th in the NFL. He replaced Sean McDermott, who was let go after two years in that role. Source: CBS Sports
I actually do believe this was bullcrap. Like JJ said, he would have little to offer this team with his history in the 3-4. Unless he wanted to teach Defense 101. Which coaches and players alike could certainly use about now.
can you really blame him? id stick with the cushy espn job rather than trying to turn around this train wreck
But again, there's NO proof of this other than that meatball saying so. As said, he makes NO sense with the defensive scheme. Might as well bring in Ed Rendell as a defensive consultant. Another case of ESPN creating news.
ok, wasnt sure. either way i believe this story. sure it makes no sense to look to a 3-4 guy to be a consultant, then again so does hiring an OL coach to run a defense with gaping holes in its roster and philosophy.
Pats have run the 3-4 until this year where they are running a combo D where they are running the 4-3
The Patriots have run a "3-4" defense since BB has been around, but it hasn't really been a solid 3-4. It's been more of a hybrid between a 3-4 and a 4-3 more often than not and that was way before just this season alone.
I don't think it is. Where there's smoke there is fire. "Contact" could mean that someone from the Eagles called him to see if he was happy at ESPN and if he's ever thought of being a defensive consultant. Which is most likely what happened. The Eagles never offered him a deal, but it's not like they didn't contact him either...
