That is what bothers me anymore. I mean I hate a lot of these rules because they just make it less fun to watch a football game. I didn't grow up in the Nightrain Lane era of NFL football but I did grow up in the 80's when defenders could lay the wood and not get penalized for it. I understand the need for player safety but still, I think it gets way overdone today and it also isn't called consistently. The hits that get flagged today were good, clean hits when I was growing up. It is still difficult to absorb at times.
Just in the last ten years since I been watching so many rule changes have made just tackling a player more of an art than a skill can't hit here or there, can't do this or that, just in ten years they have slowly deteriorated the league into a game of penalties...
