On the day after word was leaked of the Mets taking out yet another loan, here is what you heard Tuesday from Major League Baseball officials: The walls are closing in on the Wilpons. Nobody was saying that Bud Selig is ready to give the Mets owners the Frank McCourt treatment, and start chasing them toward the door. But neither was there any mistaking the growing concern from inside the MLB offices about the state of the franchise. “They have a lot of things coming due,” was the way one MLB official put it. “They need some things to happen fairly soon.” The official went on to explain that the banks, more so than MLB, are likely to start squeezing the Wilpons. “They’re sort of at the end here with the banks and everything else,” the official said.

Yes please, Yes Please, Yes Please. Paving the way for Mark Cuban to buy this team! GET IT DONE BUD! I will never, ever, ever again criticize him EVER again if this gets done and we get more than a SUPER lame duck owner who doesn't know crap about crap. MARK CUBAN AND THE METS MAKE A GREAT TEAM!!!

They won't. It's just wishful thinking. He tried to in 09 when the Wilpons dabbled in selling it. The good ol' boys won't ever let that happen. He'd be the best thing for baseball ESPECIALLY in New York. I think if someone were to buy it it'd be David Einhorn who should have received part of them this year but Wilpon is a rod! I'd MUCH rather have Cuban though.

unfortunately, i think we may have more situations like the dodgers and mets in the future as many of these 2nd tier teams try to keep up with the yankees and red sox. i can't blame them for trying to stay competitive, though, even though they don't have the revenue stream.

How does a New York team not have a sufficient revenue stream? Of all the places, you'd think that would be the easiest place to make money. And if it's because they're in the shadow of the Yankees, maybe it's time to move the team or something. Because that's kind of ridiculous.

the mets have a good revenue stream, they just don't have the yankees and red sox revenue stream and they overspend trying to keep up with them in the headlines.

i think its more about bad decisions. if their moves panned out and resulted in a world series victory the mets wouldnt be in this position. but when you pour the kind of money they did into santana and basically get squat in return the stands of a brand new stadium are half filled this is what happens.

didnt help to invest their money they way they did either.

well, i agree that the mets have made some bad investments that prevented them from winning a world series but i could say that about most teams, including the yankees and red sox. and that's wherein the problem lies. a lot of these MLB teams are spending money like drunken sailors and just hoping they win a world series to pay for the players. That's a huge risk.

Obviously, only 1 team each year can win it so there are several teams each year that rolled the dice and lost. The Tigers are the worst at this. They're losing $30 million every season and they haven't won crap recently. In their case, their owner has plenty of money to throw into the team to make up the difference. But, when ownership isn't in a good cash flow position and they start playing fantasy baseball with their roster, they go bankrupt.

I haven't analyzed each owner's cash flow position but I would imagine there are more of these dodger/met situations to come, especially because of the down economy.

surely that's part of it duke but again a 1/2 filled stadium definitely is too. like capt and i said these teams spend like crazy and when like in the mets case you don't even make the playoffs let alone world series or win it all you're screwed.

btw - on a sidenote i still cant figure out why the mets new stadium has green seats. :dunno:

The Cubs spent $300 million dollars a couple years ago. They are routinely in the top 5 highest payrolls and they still suck butt every year. Why can they profit and the Mets can't?

Wilpon is a life long Dodger fan which is WHY he bought the Mets. He built Citi to look like Ebbets field which is why it has MONSTROUS dimensions until this season and it looks the way it does. There's the "Jackie Robinson Rotunda" for gods sakes. I know Jackie did a lot but in NO WAY is he related to the New York Mets. The fact that it isn't the "Shea Rotunda" is just disgusting. Or the Hodges Rotunda or the Seaver Rotunda, whatever! NOT THE FREAKING ROBINSON ROTUNDA!!!! The Mets have not been competitive on a large scale is because they can't stay healthy. They keep bringing in names but they have an AWFUL medical staff run by Ray Rodriguez who GROSSLY mishandles players. I think that Reyes will get a full season as long as the Marlins med staff knows what's going on. Those guys are DOUCHES in Queens. I think Sandy Alderson is the PERFECT man to fix the Mets along with Terry Collins but now that our manager and GM aren't dolts management wants us to have an 80 million dollar payroll. Us fans AREN'T going to spend mad money to go to a game to watch a minor league, non competitive team on the field. ITS NEW YORK! WE'RE NOT A SMALL MARKET TEAM YOU FREAKING MORON!

But Jackie Robinson did do much for the game. It's only natural that the Mets honor him that way...lol...
