Cam Newton Blames JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young For The Disrespect He Gets

Cam Newton entered the NFL as one of the most critiqued prospects in the draft, scrutinized because of the investigation regarding charges that he got paid to attend Auburn. We got on him after he called himself an entertainer and icon. His character was destroyed in Pro Football Weekly’s draft preview. We even pointed out that he struggled to call an audible in Jon Gruden’s televised quarterback camp. That’s a lot of scrutiny for one player but Cam says it’s the recent failures of JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young that ruined the perception of him. “But I can’t sit up here and look at it like, oh man, my critics are racist,†Newton said to ESPN the Magazine. “I blame JaMarcus Russell and to some degree Vince Young. If you have the opportunity to make that kind of money doing something you love to do, why would you screw it up? I’m trying to be a trailblazer. If Baylor’s Robert Griffin decides to come out, I want people to say ‘He can be the next Cam Newton’ instead of ‘He’s gonna be the next JaMarcus Russell.’ I had people who can’t throw a football telling me my mechanics were wrong,†says Newton. “I had people taking shots at my character, classifying me as a thug, as a hoodlum. After Week 3 or 4, all these same people wanted an interview. I said, ‘You were giving me all this crap and had so much to say about how I was gonna play, and now you wanna talk? No. Just sit back and watch the show, man.’â€

20 pass tds to 16 ints is hardly boss. If he can get to the 2 tds to 1 int ratio for a whole season then he can talk. He is doing slightly better then mike vick when it comes to passing. Too many turnovers

I am not impressed with that rookie record. This is a pass happy league now. I am not saying he can't throw the ball. Hell, Leaf could throw the ball. But it was a different league then. I am saying his ego is Leaf-esque. Blaming everything on everyone else. Just comes across as a loud mouth. May get yards but loses games. If he was as good as he thinks he is he should be able to "will" them to a victory.

 

He's having one of the greatest rookie QB seasons in history, so it would be unfair to say he isn't playing at a high level because he's greatly defying expectations.

However, he just needs to get his head down, shut the hell up and continue improving. It's no co-incidence that the great QB's are the one's that work the hardest, not necessarily the most talented.

 

somebody needs to grip this kid up and tell him to grow up. he cant handle being ripped because all of his life he was treated like a king and now that's not the case.

nah, this has nothing to do with skin color. the first person cam reminded me of when his arrogance first started rearing its' ugly head was jeff george and the last time i checked, he's white ............ i see a similar career for cam (jumping around from team to team, never really winning anything, having blow-ups with coaches and teammates).

unless someone can fix this guy's head, he's going to be a flash in the pan and it's hard to save these diva athletes once they get to this point ............ they basically have to figure it out on their own and a lot of times they don't figure it out until after their career is over.
